Chapter 2700 Hollywood Rhapsody (Fifty-Eight)
In the office of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury was staring at the computer screen without blinking, his hands crossed in front of him, his eyes reflecting the cold light of the computer screen, which made him look indifferent and solemn.
Natasha knocked on the door and walked in. Nick just looked up at her and then continued to stare at the computer screen. Natasha put the documents in her hand on the table. Nick didn't move his eyes and reached out to take the documents.
After quickly scanning the contents at the top of the document, Nick reached out and slapped the armrest of the chair and said, "That's it."
Natasha stood straight with her arms folded. She said, "It has been confirmed that Schiller was from your era, right? But there are many vague details in the information."
"Of course, of course it would be like that." Nick curled his lips downwards, staring at the information in his hand and said, "It's hard to find any very accurate information about that era, because there were too many secrets that needed to be covered up."
"Who is he?" Natasha walked to the front of the table and looked at Nick and asked, "What role did he play in that era?"
"He's... 'The Doctor'."
In the winter of January 1945, a tense atmosphere lingered in the streets of Berlin. Teams of soldiers passed by like a flock of crows, but they no longer had the arrogance of the past. People had already had a premonition about the future of this country.
The dark clouds are about to dissipate, and no one knows whether what will come out from between the cracks in the clouds will be the first ray of light or a heavier natural disaster. This country will pay an unimaginable price for this completely failed war. Most people have already accepted their fate, but some are still fighting stubbornly.
The lead-gray buildings on both sides of the street had only small windows and were crowded together like giants pushing hands. The long nails on the wooden doors of the bakery had long since rusted, and the threshold of the tavern had been faded by being trampled on.
The winter of this year was particularly difficult for ordinary Germans. At dusk, more devout believers were seen, and the Catholic church was bustling with people.
A man in a long gray windbreaker took off his hat. He exhaled a breath of hot air from his chest, and the white mist gradually dissipated in the gray air. He threw two coins into the bowl of the beggar who was slumped at the door. He made the sign of the cross on his chest, looked up at the crows landing on the eaves of the church, and walked towards the steps.
A young priest was standing at the doorstep waiting. The two of them quickly walked into the church, and their backs seemed to disappear into the mouth of a giant beast. The person observing on the rooftop of the opposite building put away his telescope and pushed his wind-blown hair back into his hat.
"Nothing unusual was found." He shook his head and said to the people behind him, "I think Nick is making a fuss out of nothing. There is no evidence to prove that this doctor is related to the murder. He has a sufficient alibi. More importantly, he has a good relationship with most Catholic churches in Berlin. We can't just rush in like this."
The speaker was a middle-aged man with short blond hair, a very common American soldier. The criss-crossing wrinkles on his face showed that he had considerable combat experience.
The door to the rooftop behind them suddenly opened, and both of them turned around vigilantly. Fortunately, a figure darker than the darkness appeared there.
"Hey, Nick." The blond man greeted, "Why did you come here in person? Aren't you keeping an eye on Duke?"
"I'm worried about this place, so I came to take a look. I hope you didn't rush in rashly, right? Especially you, Dino. Jones is most worried about you. This is a critical moment, you must not cause trouble."
"Don't worry, Nick. I'm standing here fine." The blond man called Dino smiled and said, "We promise we're just watching. Jonathan can vouch for me."
He looked at his companion next to him, a man with short gray hair, slightly younger than him, but seemed to have been born with a lot of white hair, making him the oldest among the three of them.
"Did you find anything?" Nick came over and sat on the edge of the rooftop. Dino shook his head and said, "We have been watching him for two days. His behavior is normal. He goes to the hospital, home, and church every day..."
"That's even more suspicious," Nick said. "Doesn't he have any entertainment? Everyone needs entertainment."
"Relax, Nick," Jonathan said. "For people like them, prayer is a rare time to relax. They think it's fun to chat with a priest, and the stories in the Bible are much more interesting than those tabloid news. They are totally old-fashioned."
"If you think so, you are wrong." Nick raised an eyebrow and said, "The only survivor of Heinemond Laboratory was killed just like that. Everyone who appeared at the scene or around the scene is a major suspect. No matter if they are doctors, teachers, or other celebrities, we cannot rule out their suspicion without reason."
Dino sighed and said, "I know we have already fallen into the most unfavorable situation. Although the invasion of the Heinemond Laboratory made Hitler abandon his atomic bomb plan, the Hydra people hijacked the unfinished atomic bomb, and now the only survivor who knew the number is dead. If they really want to do something, the whole of Berlin will be in danger."
"They can't hold out for much longer." Nick said, "Anyone with a discerning eye can see that they are making a last-ditch effort. They can only last half a year or so before Germany signs an unconditional surrender agreement. Now is their last chance, so they can't help but take action."
Nick narrowed his eyes, revealed a slightly smug look and said, "We are not afraid of them taking action, because once they take action, it means they can no longer remain calm. The enemy is in the dark, and we are in the light. The disadvantage will no longer exist. Sooner or later, the snake will reveal its tail."
"Jonathan and I came up with an idea," Dino said. "Andel Schiller claims to be a devout believer. If he is not, his conversation with the priest will definitely reveal flaws. If he is, then perhaps the confessional in the church will listen to the secrets hidden deep in his heart."
Nick shook his head and said, "You don't understand. This trick won't work on people like him. If he dares to call himself that, you won't be able to find any flaws. But it's also a direction you can try. Is the monitoring equipment ready?"
"Of course, tonight we will install wiretaps in the prayer and confessional rooms of several churches he frequents. God help us."
"It's no use just relying on God's blessing." Nick stood up and said, "I will choose to make second-hand preparations. You only have three days at most. If you don't have useful information, use my method."
Nick turned and left. Dino shook his head and said to Jonathan beside him, "I admit that he is indeed very capable, but when the boss recruited him, didn't he consider how offensive his temper would be?"
"He's a good law enforcer," Jonathan commented.
Nick hurried across the street and stopped at the door of a pub. He leaned against the wooden door frame, looked at the people passing by with vigilant eyes, and stared at the pub owner's fingers when paying for the wine.
He handed over the change, took the bottle from his hand, and at the moment the gun was taken out from under the counter, he smashed the bottle hard on the boss's wrist, snatched the gun, turned around and ran away.
Ignoring the chaotic noise coming from behind, Nick walked quickly and rushed into the nearest alley with a whoosh. He jumped onto the wall and then climbed onto the balcony on the second floor next to him, scaring an old man in a wheelchair.
"Excuse me, ma'am," Nick said in German.
"Are you being chased?" the old woman asked. There was a garbage dump outside the window where she jumped out, and she pointed to the window on the other side.
Nick put the gun into his jacket, nodded to her, walked to the window on the other side, took a look, climbed out, and jumped accurately into the garbage pile. A group of searchers with guns ran over his head.
Coming out of the garbage heap, Nick sighed, shook his hands, dusted off his jacket, and walked quickly in one direction.
After opening the tightly closed door, a burly figure swiftly entered, walked up the steep and uneven stairwell, and knocked on the door. A short-haired woman opened the door.
"Did we run into them again?" The woman made way for Nick to come in. Nick threw the gun in his arms to her and said, "They are becoming more and more reckless. It seems that they will surrender sooner than I thought."
"How early will it be? Five months later? Six months later?"
"No, I think it's probably three or four months..." Berlin wasn't big enough, and the red flag was close at hand. Nick took off his coat and threw it into the bathroom. He turned to look at the woman and said, "Jones, does Felix need an operation?"
"You mean his heart problem?" The woman called Jones said, adjusting her hair by her ears. "The doctor said he might not live past 25, but now is not a good time to do surgery."
"I know we will be very busy in the next few months and won't have the energy to take care of a patient, but once Germany surrenders, I'm afraid we will need to evacuate here immediately, and it will be difficult for us to take the boy with us."
Jones also showed some hesitation. She paced back and forth in the room and said, "You know, we are not really his parents. All this is just for the needs of the station. Without the order from the superiors, we can't do anything extra."
"But you can't bear it, right? Felix is a good kid. He has helped us a lot. We can't abandon him."
"What are you going to do?" Jones seemed to have made up her mind. She said, "When I was a nurse in the hospital, I knew a few good doctors. But Felix has a congenital heart disease. The best time to have surgery is when he is 1 to 2 years old. But he is already 11 years old this year. Not all doctors have such skills. If they are not sure, they will not want to cause trouble."
"We've recently targeted a doctor," Nick said. "Andel Schiller, the former chief surgeon at Landweil Hospital, was also one of the last people to evacuate into the city."
"The suspect in the murder of the survivor of the Heinemond Laboratory?" Jones frowned deeply and said, "You were the one who said he was a strong suspect. You don't want him to perform surgery on Felix, do you?"
"If we are too far away from him, we can only see his disguise. Only when we are close enough to him can we see his true face, right?"
"You know how risky this is." Jones' tone was very hesitant. She said, "There is a shortage of medicines now, and the hospital is full of wounded soldiers. Those lunatics are frantically searching for the surrendered soldiers hiding in the city. Sooner or later, they will approach here in search of supplies."
"Then this is the best time." Nick said, "There are always ferocious fish hiding in the chaotic pond, and what we want to see is not whether it is ferocious, but who it bites for."
"Who do you think it is?"
"It had better not be the worst, Nick said. You know I don't mean the Gestapo."
