Chapter 3995 Sewer Killer
"Wei Ge, what kind of stories do you like to hear?"
After Shad sat down again, he asked, and Vige, who was lying on her side looking at Shad, answered softly:
"Any story is fine, even traditional fairy tales, I love listening to them."
She reached her right hand out from under the covers again, wanting to hold Shad's hand once more, but Shad refused.
"Cover yourself up and don't stick your hands out. I'm sure you've heard a lot of fairy tales, but I'll tell you a detective story instead."
"A detective story like 'The Hamilton Detective Stories'?"
"Yes, which volume of that book are you on?"
"I've reached the fourth volume."
"Then I will tell the story of the fifth book."
As he spoke, he pulled a book from the starry sky bookshelf that appeared beside him, and opened the book with a dreamy star-blue color on his lap.
Dorothy would sometimes use her Saturday evening classes to have Shad read her books to him, to determine if he was satisfied with the stories she had written. Therefore, Shad was fully aware of the contents of all the stories Dorothy had published to date.
“Then I shall begin, Viggo—I still remember that morning; the weather was terrible. I (referring to the detective's assistant, Dorothy's alter ego in the story) was summoned early to Tobeske train station by Detective Hamilton. He had some things to tell me before heading out of town to solve the Hound of the Wild.”
Vige kept looking at Xia De as he told the story, but Xia De had only read two pages when Vige closed her eyes and began to breathe evenly.
"Asleep? Is my voice that hypnotic?"
Xia De thought to himself, read another page, and only after confirming that Wei Ge was really asleep did he lower his voice slightly until he stopped completely.
He gazed at the exquisite sleeping face of the Great Witch of Chaos for a long time before carefully standing up, turning off the gas lamp by the bedside, and then leaving the room.
Miss McDonald had been in the hallway the whole time. When Shad came out, the two of them tacitly walked to the other side of the hallway before they started talking.
"Wei Ge is asleep. Let her sleep for a while. We'll wake her up at noon."
"Shad said," the tall girl said, while the girl asked, "..."
"Mr. Watson, are you leaving now?"
"Yes, I still have some things to do in the outer city, but I'll try my best to get back by noon."
He also had to see Mr. Finch:
"Also, I learned something from out of town. Yesterday's explosion had very serious consequences, and today..."
He briefly explained that the three academies and four churches would be joining forces to approach the Church of Creation today, and asked Miss McDonald to inform Vigo's followers to be careful during the events of the next two days.
"If I don't return by noon, tell Vige what I said, and have Vige pass the information on to the council. In short, the [Church of Creation] has really caused a huge disaster this time."
The girl with beautiful rose-gold hair gently reminded him:
"Actually, more than this information, the teacher would prefer you to come back at noon."
Xia De nodded:
"I will definitely come back unless there is an emergency. I just need to take care of some things at Finch Gear Workshop."
But he didn't rush to leave; instead, he asked again:
"By the way, how's the revision of those two articles coming along?"
Miss McDonald was somewhat surprised that Shad still remembered this, and she replied:
"It's still being revised, and it will probably be sent out again this Friday."
"Let me take another look when I have the chance. I do miss it. I mean, maybe I can offer some suggestions."
Xia De waved to her:
"There's no need to arrange a carriage. I'll take advantage of the thick fog outside and get to the outer city faster by my own means."
After saying this, he headed for the stairs, and Miss McDonald quickly followed to see him off. Watching Shad's retreating figure, she thought he was indeed a strange but interesting person.
"The teacher has excellent taste."
Although it was a foggy day, Shad didn't actually fly over the city. Thanks to the city being built on the side of a mountain, it was actually very short to walk from the upper city to the outer city in a straight line, so Shad spent some time jumping back and forth on the rooftops and quickly left the foggy area and entered the real smog area below the mountain.
"Currently, apart from my dragon form, none of my transformation forms can fly. The red butterfly can fly, but its speed is relatively slow. It would be much more convenient if I could learn transformations like the owl."
As he regained his human form in the alley, he was still thinking about it, and then he recalled the "Owl Express" he had ridden on many times last autumn.
Tuesday morning was bustling in the outer suburbs, with vendors and locals working and living in the area all busy making a living. At the "Finch Gear Workshop," Xia De unexpectedly spotted a familiar face:
"Mr. Bernhardt?"
When Shad entered, the middle-aged vampire was examining the "exhibits" that Shad had previously looked at with interest. Hearing Shad's voice, he immediately looked towards the doorway, and then, quite surprised, observed:
"Mr. Watson! I was planning to write to you this afternoon to tell you about the recent events. You know Mr. Finch, too?"
"Yes, it was recommended by a friend from out of town."
“I was introduced by my family elders. After the accident last Friday night, I wrote a letter to Willendale, and then those ‘elders’ recommended me to come here. They said that Mr. Finch is one of the few people in Arcadia who can be absolutely trusted.”
It seems that this old gentleman from the Hermitage has some connection with vampires. However, this is not Mr. Bernhardt's first visit today; he had already contacted Mr. Finch yesterday.
The old gentleman was still at the factory dealing with some matters, so the shop apprentice asked the two to wait in the reception room of the small white building in the factory. After Mr. Bernhardt sat down, he apologized to Shad:
"The body from Friday must have been very valuable. I didn't expect the other side to be so vigilant. The body had problems as soon as the blood was examined."
"This actually shows that the corpse itself is of great value, Mr. Bernhardt. I am very interested in the 'new humans' you mentioned. But before that, I also have some information to share. That group most likely belongs to the [Blood Spirit School]."
Mr. Bernhardt was not very surprised:
"When I saw that two of the attackers were high-level vampires on Friday night, I guessed this possibility. Most of our clans who currently believe in the Red Moon and the Vampire Dukes are seeking a stable life, while most of our clans who have joined the Blood Spirit School are the 'wild vampires' I mentioned to you in Moon Bay."
Those clans worshipped an ancient god of creation, craved the power of flesh and blood evolution, and mostly maintained rather cruel and disgusting habits. If it was them, then this matter would be easily explained; after all, vampires understand vampires best, and to be able to make so many of their own kind disappear so silently is no simple matter.
Mr. Bernhardt has essentially confirmed that the mastermind behind this matter is the Blood Spirit School, and he has also provided a more detailed explanation of the situation regarding the "New Humans":
"I am quite certain that the other party's race is still human. Their physical structure and nature have not changed, but they are much stronger than ordinary humans and have shown strength in all aspects."
"The Blood Spirit School... has it really found a way for humanity to evolve?"
Shad asked suspiciously, but Mr. Bernhardt shook his head:
"This enhancement seems impressive, but after analyzing the remaining blood sample, I discovered some problems. This seemingly omnipotent enhancement likely comes at the cost of reducing the maximum life force. And this is only the most preliminary assessment of the cost, as the body hasn't been thoroughly examined, and other details are still unclear."
Even so, my fellow tribesmen and I, who came to this area, still believe this technology is quite remarkable. After all, how many people in this era can truly survive to the limit of their lifespan?
Shad then shared news about the "Holy Son Alliance" with Mr. Bernhardt, who had never heard of these people but considered them the most insane lunatics he had ever heard of:
"Aren't they afraid of being struck by lightning one day?"
Mr. Bernhardt also had some new information to share with Shad:
"After what happened on Friday night, I suspected that our whereabouts had already been exposed, and that there might even have been a mole in our line of duty while we were in Willendale."
So, although we were still nominally residing in the Marquis's manor in the lower city, I actually had everyone dispersed throughout the city to find their own accommodations, and we agreed to return to the Marquis's manor periodically to gather information. I suspected that some members of the group were unreliable, and I wanted to observe their actions one by one.
I've found accommodation in the outer city, and unexpectedly, I made a really big discovery on Sunday. Mr. Watson, are you aware of the refugee disappearance case?
Xia De nodded:
"I've heard about it. So Mr. Finch got involved in this matter yesterday because of you?"
Vampire Seed Duke nodded:
“I heard about this from people in the outer city, but I didn’t pay any attention to it at first. But on Sunday night, when I was on my way back after finding out about the incident from the tavern and the black market, I actually encountered the refugees who had been attacked.”
Mr. Bernhardt described it as follows:
"I saw the whole thing. The things that attacked the family of three who were picking up trash came out of the sewer. He could make his body change into an amorphous shape. Because he was wearing a hood, I couldn't see his true appearance."
It tried to devour the family of three, but I repelled it. That thing was very strange; it could absorb life force from a distance, had no fatal parts, and its body had great flexibility. I even suspected that it possessed a certain degree of immortality.
Although that 'sewer killer' eventually escaped back into the sewers, I was worried it was another trap and didn't give chase. But I was certain it possessed a strong vampire aura, and it even displayed some of the vampire's talents.
Mr. Bernhardt thus made the following judgment:
“I suspect that the group from the Blood Spirit School who attacked and kidnapped the local vampires might have wanted to use my kin to create this strange monster. Even if not, it is definitely related to the kidnapping of our own kind.”
