Chapter 3976 Agent and Princess
Margaret stood at the tower entrance, smiling as she greeted Shad's embrace:
“I haven’t seen you for over a week. I guessed you would come this morning, so I used the key my teacher gave me to teleport here. Teacher Sylvia isn’t here; she’s preparing potions and can’t leave for the time being. She said I could use the portal in the portal room to go back.”
As the tower doors closed, Margaret whispered the rest of her sentence to Shad. Shad, of course, knew what she meant. His agreed-upon meeting with Mr. Munoz of the "Strange Tower" was actually close to noon, and Mr. Bernhardt wasn't in a particular hurry.
"Then, tell me about your findings."
As he spoke, he bent down and, amidst Margaret's laughing exclamations, lifted her up in a standard "princess carry."
“I always have time until 10:30.”
"That's enough for my report. But you've troubled me with such a difficult task, my knight, you must compensate me."
She kissed Shad's cheek, licked her lips, and then whispered in his ear:
"I'm wearing a really nice inner layer, I'll show you in a bit. But I also have some expectations of you."
"Still from the back? No problem."
"No, what I want to say is, before you say goodbye to me today, please don't let my legs touch the ground again."
She moved her head away from Shad's ear, then touched her nose to Shad's nose, her large eyes meeting Shad's eyes directly:
“You can definitely do it. I don’t mean you have to hold me the whole time. I know you have amazing chains and you’re very good at manipulating ropes, right?”
Shad could certainly do it, but Margaret herself couldn't. Or rather, Margaret's experience simply couldn't compare to that of the seasoned Luvia and Galina. This led to her asking Shad to put her down, but to compensate him, she did something that maids were very good at.
As for the "Grey Gloves" outpost in Arcadia, the "City of Scholars," even for Margaret, accessing the information would not be easy.
After the founding of the Kingdom of Carsenric, the Anjou family remained more wary of Arcadia City than of Moon Bay. After all, even if the merchants in Moon Bay, represented by the seven great families, caused a great deal of trouble, they only wanted to break away and establish their own kingdom. However, Arcadia City was the former capital of the Kingdom of Derinor, and the restorationists were still active there.
The slightest misstep could shake the entire eastern territory of Carsenrick, thereby affecting the stability of the entire kingdom. Therefore, the "Grey Gloves" have a considerable number of personnel in Arcadia City, and their operations are highly classified.
Even so, Margaret managed to find what Shad wanted in half a week. Although Her Highness didn't obtain intelligence on all the local outposts or the identities of all the agents, she did find Shad a suitable opportunity to make contact with the local agents.
"Today is the 27th of the Sowing Month. Around the middle of next month, Velendale will send a new batch of 'Grey Gloves' agents to Arcadia City to assist with the local mission. I have already obtained the contact code. You can disguise yourself as a Velendale agent sent to the area and meet with the local intelligence personnel."
Once you find the local agents, it's actually quite easy to extract information through hypnosis or to invade dreams and read memories.
The languid Margaret was held in Shad's arms, while Sylvia, of course, wouldn't share her bedroom; they were currently in a guest room in the tower.
"What is the mission of this new group of agents? Will this affect things in Carsonrick?"
"The mission is related to Greyrock Pass. It seems to be about investigating several nobles from Velendale smuggling contraband through Greyrock Pass. Although it's not on the border, it was the most important pass outside the front line during wartime. Grey Gloves headquarters believes that the investigation has been delayed because some of the local agents have been bribed, which is why they sent people directly from Velendale."
Margaret's fingers unconsciously drew circles:
“But I don’t think we can find anything by sending people from Willendale. At most, we’ll just find a scapegoat. This matter even involves a duke. No one is completely clean. Father understands this, so he only sent people to investigate symbolically and warn the smugglers not to go too far.”
“I understand. We can pretend not to care now, and if we have to deal with them for other reasons later, we won’t even need to find a reason or evidence.”
Shad said, and Margaret smiled:
“I love you just the way you are. No matter what I say, you understand and you can stay for another half hour, right? So please keep holding me. I can’t always be by your side, but at least I can feel your warmth like this.”
"Oh, Margaret~"
The princess looked up at him again:
"But recently there has been an opportunity for me to go to Arcadia. The war has been going on for a month now, and Father plans to send people to the eastern, central, and western fronts, not to oversee the troops, but just to inspect the situation."
And coincidentally, of the royal family's children, besides the married sister, the underage brother, and the illegitimate brother who only returned last year, there are exactly three who are currently fit to travel.
That is, the eldest prince Samuel Anjou, the second prince William Anjou, and Margaret herself.
Shad understood what Margaret meant:
"Are you going to the front lines?"
Margaret nodded and took Shad's hand:
"Don't worry, Father won't really send us to dangerous places. We'll just go to the front lines symbolically to take a few propaganda photos and give some speeches, and then leave the front lines to take up positions in logistics cities or transportation hubs on the edge of the eastern, central, and western battlefields."
My father probably meant that we could stay outside until summer, and that he would give us full freedom then. Perhaps this was a test he was putting on us.
Xia De understood:
"Arcadia is indeed the most important peripheral logistics and transportation hub city on the Eastern Front. How should we allocate our respective destinations?"
"The western front was the most intense in terms of fighting, and we also had to deal with the Moon Bay issue and assist in the management of the navy. It was the most troublesome, but it was also the best place to demonstrate our abilities."
The central battlefield extends from the Great Swamp area to the western part of Green Lake. Anyone who goes there will likely have to stay in the swamp for a while, as the accommodation and living conditions are very poor. Moreover, the swamp area is the focus of this battle, and larger-scale battles may break out in the future.
As for the eastern front, it stretched eastward from Lake Green to the edge of the Rommel Mountains. The fighting there wasn't intense, but coordinating the supply of materials from the eastern part of the kingdom to the front lines was crucial. While a large-scale battle was unlikely, the most pressing issues to handle were those requiring constant attention in the office.
Margaret briefly analyzed the characteristics of the three-front war for Shad, then smiled and said:
“Brother Samuel will definitely go to the Western Front, where the situation is the most dangerous and complex, but also the easiest to achieve results; as for my second brother and me, Father will definitely send me to the Eastern Front. After all, whether it was dealing with the Stonemasons’ Guild in Randall Valley or investigating the illegitimate child in Vista Woods, I have demonstrated the best coordination skills.”
"Will you be very busy then?"
Shad asked again, and Margaret shook her head:
"I'm fed up with everyone being busy helping you while I have to deal with my own personal matters. Now that we have this kind of relationship, I won't let those other people's business hold me back anymore."
This time, I will seek help from the Witch Council, having them send their most capable and politically astute ladies to assist me. I will only need to make decisions on major issues. This isn't exactly the Council helping Carsonrick; I will also send a copy of the intelligence to Duke Galina. In this way, as long as I maintain stability on the eastern front and peace in Moon Bay, everything else will be out of my hands.
Margaret had already thought everything through, even planning to play a role in the Battle of the Chosen, at least not worse than the others.
As the least senior witch apprentice of her generation, she was actually quite worried about not being able to compare with the others. But after having an intimate relationship with Shad and hearing him admit that although he and Tifa were close, they hadn't taken the final step, Margaret's pride surged forth:
"I am the first witch apprentice!"
This idea is somewhat similar to Galina's long-standing pride; they both seem to regard their close relationship with Shad as an honor, a notion that Shad finds difficult to understand.
As for Margaret's assumption that Arcadia would become the center of chaos, it was not because she saw clues that Shad could not, but because Shad had already come into contact with a new Great Witch in the area, and signs of chaos and disaster were already emerging.
Golden Princess is good at summarizing patterns. Even though she doesn't have the talent for prophecy or divination, she can vaguely sense the gloom in Arcadia City. Besides, it would be better if nothing happened there, so that she could "monopolize" Shad.
However, the exact time for Margaret's departure to the Eastern Front has not yet been determined, and King "The Lion" Lane clearly has no intention of sending his children to the battlefield in the near future. The King is waiting for a suitable opportunity and also hoping that they can be ready in Willendale.
Margaret was able to access information about the "Grey Gloves" organization in the Arcadia region because the King still believed she was preparing to deepen her understanding of the Eastern Front.
"It's already the end of April, Shad. You'll see me in Arcadia in about a month. Maybe I'll even get to visit the Industrial Exposition. This time, I won't miss any important events!"
Shade spent a long, tender time with Margaret before bidding a reluctant farewell to the princess when it was almost time.
She now possesses the [Leaf of Immortality], the Dragon Scale Amulet, and the Star Dewdrop given to her by Shad, and is also accompanied by Sylvia, so Shad is not worried about her safety. He is also looking forward to seeing Margaret in Arcadia City as soon as possible.
