Chapter 54: The Fixer
Chapter 54: The Fixer
It had been four days since their first mission, and Thorn had fully healed.
Just by looking at his stomach, one wouldn’t have even known that he’d been injured. In the place of the deep gash was pale, smooth skin. There wasn’t even a scar left behind.
Just like Ren had expected the healing had left no evidence at all of the injury. But the time spent healing meant they had just ten days left before they got to the capital.
They needed to make use of the remaining time to eliminate the remaining four key members of Fuchsia and it definitely wouldn’t be easy.
And so, on the fourth night, Ren and Thorn teleported back to Steadfast under the cover of darkness.
As expected, the soldier had followed Ren’s instructions and relocated to a different inn. Ren couldn’t take chances. If anyone had noticed the healer following after the soldier and had tailed them to the previous inn, it might lead anyone
The desk looked different, like it actually saw use. Sitting on it were a few stickers of cigars and an unopened bottle of wine.
Ren signalled and they both found hiding places in the darkness at the corners of the room, Ren perched at the top of one of the extravagant shelves while Thorn took the opposite shelf.
And so they waited.
Two hours passed before the door finally creaked open.
The mistress entered first, a beautiful woman wearing a black, expensive silk dress, and red lipstick.
Behind her came the Fixer, a handsome and well-dressed man with sideburns that enhanced his looks.
But they were not the only ones. Following behind were two other men. Men Ren recognized.
They took their seats in the chairs in front of the desk, the Fixer leaning back with his arms around his mistress as he poured himself a drink.
Ren signaled to Thorn, identifying the Fixer silently. They wouldn’t attack now. Ren knew how dangerous it would be to attack now. They’d wait until the Fixer was alone.
But that didn’t mean he couldn’t listen in on their conversation. Any information he could get from Fuchsia’s inner circle had to be valuable.
"The job is risky, but the payout is worth it." One of the men said.
"Not to me." The Fixer drawled, taking a sip of wine.
"It doesn’t matter what we want." The second man said. "Kingpin accepted the job. He wants the girl dead, and he wants it soon."
"Well, that’s none of my business, Giles." The Fixer chuckled. "That’s for you guys to take care of."
The second man, Giles, grabbed the bottle, and poured himself a glass of wine. "Lilith Underwood won’t be an easy target."
Wait, what? Ren blinked. Lilith Underwood?
"Killing a noble’s daughter without repercussions? Especially one like Lilith Underwood?" Giles continued. "Nearly impossible. We’ll need to leave no traces."
The other man scoffed. "She’s just a girl. How difficult could it be?"
"I’d like to see what you have to say about that when she steals your soul with just a touch." Giles laughed.
Ren’s fist clenched from where he crouched. They really were talking about Lilith.
But what was going on? Who would order a hit on Lilith? Why? He’d have to get to the bottom of this.
The fixer chuckled from where he sat. "You’re making me wish I can come along. I wouldn’t mind getting a look at her before we finish the job. Heard she’s quite the beauty."
Ren froze. Then, a fire began building in his gut, travelling through his veins and spreading as his eyes burned.
Thorn, sensing the shift in Ren’s emotions, locked eyes with him from his perch, shaking his head urgently.
"Well, I like them fresh too, so I guess I’ll help myself." Giles laughed and Ren almost jumped down there and then to kill the man but Thorn’s eyes kept him in place.
Not yet.
Ren forced himself to exhale slowly, steadying his breathing. Acting now would jeopardize the mission. He couldn’t take them all out at once. But he’d start with the Fixer. He just needed the man alone.
The conversation shifted to other things and after two more hours of exchanging banter, the meeting ended.
The two other men stood, giving nods to the Fixer before exiting the study.
The fixer took a few minutes to enjoy himself with his mistress before sending her away.
The door clicked shut. Finally, the Fixer was alone.
Ren and Thorn waited to verify everybody was truly gone before jumping down from their hiding places.
The Fixer barely had time to register their presence before Ren grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the desk.
"Wha—!" The Fixer gasped, struggling, but Ren tightened his grip, his eyes burning with fury.
"You should’ve kept your mouth shut." He said coldly.
Thorn moved quickly, securing the door before standing guard. There would be no interruptions.
The Fixer’s expression twisted from shock to arrogance. "You don’t know who you’re dealing with. Kill me, and—"
Ren silenced him by pressing a dagger against his throat. "I know exactly who I’m dealing with. And you know what?" He grinned viciously, showing teeth. "I’m going to enjoy this."
