Chapter 220: Trivial Things Before the Lunar New Year

Chapter 220: Trivial Things Before the Lunar New Year

Su Qing and Su Sanlang returned home dragging a cart of New Year's goods. "Uncle Li, please arrange for someone to move the New Year's goods off the carriage!" Su Qing's voice was clear and loud, echoing in the yard.

"Yes, girl!" Uncle Li responded quickly with a smile on his face!

Su Qing came to Old Wang's room, "Grandpa, Grandma." There was a hint of coquettishness in her tone.

"Oh, my dear grandson is back!" Old Wang was sitting on the couch. When she heard Su Qing's voice, she immediately became energetic and the wrinkles on her face relaxed. She stretched out her hand and motioned Su Qing to come over.

"Yeah!" Su Qing quickly walked to Old Wang and sat down next to her.

Old Wang looked at her Su Qing lovingly and touched his head. "Are you tired from the journey?"

"Not tired, grandma. It's very lively outside. The streets of the county town are full of people. We bought a lot of delicious and fun things." Su Qing said excitedly.

"You are the only one who talks sweetly. Where is your third brother? Didn't he come back with you?" Old Wang asked with a smile.

"Third brother is busy sorting the goods with Uncle Li. He asked me to come over and see you and grandpa first." Su Qing replied.

At this time, Su Sanlang also walked in. "Grandma, I'm here too. This New Year's goods contains your favorite cakes. I went to several stores to buy them."

"Sanlang is thoughtful too." Old Mrs. Wang looked at her two grandsons with satisfaction. "It's not easy for you to go out. Don't go through so much trouble for an old woman like me in the future."

"Grandma, what are you talking about? How can buying things for you be considered a hassle?" Su Qing said, holding Old Wang's hand. "By the way, where is Grandpa?"

"Your grandfather went to find your Grandpa Wang!" said Old Wang.

"Then I'll go see Grandpa and Grandpa Wang." Su Qing said as he stood up.

"Go! Ask your grandfather to come back and have some cakes!" Old Mrs. Wang advised.

Su Qing responded, took two boxes of cakes and walked towards Grandpa Wang's residence. Su Sanlang stayed in the room with Old Mrs. Wang and continued to talk about interesting things on the way.

Su Qing arrived at Grandpa Wang's door, gently dusted herself off, and stepped inside. She saw Old Man Su and Grandpa Wang gathered around a solar heater, their fingers deftly weaving small baskets. The heater emitted a soft glow and warmth, making the house cozy. "Grandpa Wang, I came to see you! I brought you some cakes!" Su Qing said with a bright smile, handing over the cakes.

"Oh, Qingbao is here! Since you're here, why do you need to buy things?" Grandpa Wang put down the bamboo strips in his hand, rubbed his hands on his clothes, and then took the cake, his eyes full of joy and love.

"Hehe!" Su Qing scratched his head, revealing two cute dimples.

"Your grandfather is here too!" Grandpa Wang pointed to Old Man Su who was concentrating on weaving baskets next to him.

"Grandpa! What are you doing here?" Su Qing approached Old Man Su.

Old Man Su raised his reading glasses and glanced at Su Qing. "Girl, you are allowed to go out and hang out, but I am not allowed to stay here and weave baskets with my old friends to relieve my boredom?"

"Grandpa, that's not what I meant. I'm just curious, what is this small basket for?" Su Qing explained with a smile.

"It has so many uses. It can hold small items and looks nice in the house." Grandpa Wang said, "Qingbao, if you have any new experiences during your trip, tell us about them."

"Yes, there is an acrobat in the market. His skills are superb. He can throw flying knives around in circles without hurting anyone. There are also many merchants from other places who bring some strange and weird gadgets. There is a small box that can sing. It's amazing." Su Qing's eyes lit up and he described it with his hands and feet dancing.

"Haha, kid, you only know how to look at these new things." Old man Su joked with a smile.

"By the way, grandpas, I also heard that the town will hold a Lantern Festival this year. It will be very lively. Let's go and see it together." Su Qing looked at the two old men with anticipation.

Old Man Su and Grandpa Wang looked at each other, and Old Man Su spoke first: "Okay, as long as you don't complain that we are walking too slowly."

"No, no, I will definitely accompany the grandfathers to have a good look around." Su Qing patted his chest and promised.

Su Qing spent a long, cheerful chat with the two old men at Grandpa Wang's, their laughter flowing. Old Man Su concentrated on finishing the last few stitches of his basket, pressing it gently to check it was secure, then, satisfied, set it down. He stood up, stretched his slightly stiff back, and said, "My dear, it's getting late. Let's go home, grandpa and grandson." Su Qing nodded obediently, supporting Old Man Su as they slowly walked home.

Ever since Su Qing handed over full responsibility for the family business to Su Sanlang, she felt the weight of her burdens suddenly vanish. The tension and fatigue she'd previously felt from worrying about the business gradually dissipated, and she felt like a bird freed from its tether, savoring this rare moment of freedom. While she might have been playing it safe, she was actually rediscovering her long-lost little girl self.

Back at the Su family, Su Qing carefully supported Old Man Su and walked slowly to the main courtyard. After entering the house, Su Qing called out crisply, "Grandma, Grandpa is back!"

Old Mrs. Wang was sitting on the armchair in the main hall. When she heard the voice, she raised her head slightly and asked, "Why are you back just now?" There was a hint of anger in her words.

"I'll chat with Grandpa and Grandpa Wang for a while. Grandpa will come back after he finishes weaving the basket he is working on!" Su Qing explained with a smile, walked to Old Wang and gently patted her shoulders.

"You kid, all you do is keep them busy." Although Old Mrs. Wang said this, there was a smile on her face.

Old Man Su sat down and said, "This isn't idle work at all. Chatting with old friends and writing something makes me feel good."

"You are right." Old Mrs. Wang rolled her eyes at him!

"Grandpa, grandma, I'm going back to my yard! I'm a little tired! Let's go back to the house and rest for a while!" Su Qing pouted slightly, her eyes revealing a hint of fatigue, and her voice was a little lazy.

"Go! My dear!" Old Mrs. Wang looked at her lovingly, her eyes full of pampering and care.

Su Qing nodded gently, turned, and slowly walked out of the main house. She walked slowly along the familiar corridor, the stone pavement under her feet making a slight sound. When she passed the garden in the courtyard, she stopped and casually lingered for a moment on the green plants that still grew tenaciously in the winter. She took a deep breath of the slightly chilled air, as if trying to clear her mind.

When she returned to her yard, Dongmei came to greet her: "Miss, you are finally back. I was worried about you."

Su Qing forced a smile: "Dongmei, I'm a little tired. Please prepare some hot water for me. I want to soak my feet."

"Okay, girl." Dongmei hurried to prepare.

Su Qing walked into the room, sat on the couch, and gently rubbed his temples. A moment later, Dongmei came in with hot water and helped Su Qing soak his feet. Su Qing put his feet in the warm water, feeling the warmth slowly dissipate his body's fatigue, and couldn't help but sigh softly.

After soaking his feet, Su Qing lay down on the bed and fell asleep!

By the time Su Qing woke up, it was already the hour of Xu. The room was dark, with only a few faint rays of moonlight shining through the window lattice onto the ground. Su Qing sat up in a daze. Dongmei, who was outside, heard the noise and knocked on the door. After receiving an answer, she pushed the door open and came in. "Miss, are you awake?"

"Yeah!" Su Qing rubbed his sleepy eyes, his voice still a little hoarse.

"Dinner is warming in the pot in the kitchen! Girl, you are the only one who hasn't had dinner! How about I bring dinner to you in the room or in the dining room?" Dongmei stepped forward and lit the candlestick beside the bed, and the room instantly became a little brighter.

"Bring it inside!" Su Qing yawned, feeling lazy all over and really didn't want to get up and go to the dining room.

"Yes, girl!" Dongmei responded, turned around and walked quickly towards the kitchen.

A short while later, Dongmei returned with a tray laden with exquisite dishes. She placed the dishes on the table one by one. "Miss, today we have your favorite braised pork and stir-fried seasonal vegetables. I asked the kitchen to leave some extra."

Su Qing stood up, put on a coat, and walked to the table to sit down. Looking at the steaming hot food, her stomach also started to growl. She picked up the chopsticks, picked up a piece of braised pork and put it into her mouth. The aroma of meat instantly spread across her taste buds. "Hmm, it tastes good."

"As long as the girl likes it," Dongmei said with a smile, "Are you tired today? How come you slept for so long?"

"Maybe it's because I was busy these days, and now that I'm relaxing, I feel tired." Su Qing said while eating.

"Miss, you should have a good rest. You have lost a lot of weight recently." Dongmei looked at Su Qing with heartache.

"Has everyone else had dinner?" Su Qing asked.

"Everyone has had their dinner! Only you, young lady, didn't have dinner!" Dongmei replied.

Su Qing nodded and continued to eat in silence. After dinner, Dongmei brought tea and said, "Miss, have some tea to relieve your greasiness."

Su Qing took the teacup and took a sip. "Dongmei, you should go and have a rest too. I'll sit for a while."

"Yes, young lady." Dongmei retreated. Su Qing sat at the table, looking out the window at the night, his thoughts gradually drifting away, not knowing what he was thinking about.
