Chapter 37 Breakfast
Chapter 37 Breakfast
The next morning, Jiang Yan was awakened by a faint rustling sound outside.
He groggily reached for his phone, and the screen lit up, displaying the time: 06:47.
So early?
He rubbed his eyes, rolled out of bed, and stepped barefoot onto the cool floor, gently pushing open the door.
The living room was dimly lit, but the small, warm yellow light in the kitchen was on.
A small figure wearing light pink pajamas was tiptoeing around in the kitchen.
From Jiang Yan's perspective, Kim Minjung was holding a pair of stainless steel chopsticks, intently stirring something in a small bowl, his movements clumsy yet earnest.
Jiang Yan leaned against the door frame for a while, then raised his hand and gently knocked twice on the kitchen door with his knuckles.
"Thump, thump".
Startled by the sudden sound, Kim Minjung's shoulders trembled, and the chopsticks in his hand fell to the side with a "clatter".
She turned around quickly, her left hand instinctively hiding the small bowl behind her back, her little face filled with the guilt of being caught doing something wrong.
"Oppa, why are you up so early today?"
Jiang Yan's gaze swept past her shoulder and landed on the stove behind her.
There were two eggs on the cutting board, one of which was broken, with the shell cracked into several pieces, and a small puddle of egg white spilled on the board, along with a few small pieces of eggshell mixed in.
Kim Minjung noticed his gaze and quickly explained in a low voice, "Oppa, I wanted to crack the eggs for you first, and then wake you up..."
Jiang Yan looked at her guilty expression and glanced at the egg white mixed with broken eggshells on the cutting board. The corners of his mouth curved slightly, but he didn't say anything. He just nodded casually.
"All right."
He stretched and said, "You go ahead and get ready, I'll go wash up."
After saying that, he turned and walked towards the restroom.
Kim Minjung was clearly taken aback. She hadn't expected him to ask nothing, not even a single teasing word. This was completely unlike the Jiang Yan she knew.
She watched Jiang Yan's back warily, making sure he really went into the bathroom and the door was indeed closed, before she breathed a long sigh of relief.
Then she turned around, frowning as she stared at the clump of egg liquid in the bowl that she had stirred up into a mess. Several pieces of broken eggshells of different sizes were floating in it. She would scoop one out and another would appear. It was an endless mess.
She reached in with her chopsticks, carefully picked up the largest piece of shell, held her breath, and lifted it upwards.
The eggshell was slippery, and it took me three tries to pick it out. Then, my chopsticks trembled, and another piece fell back into the shell.
"Ah...shi..." Kim Minjung swallowed the uncivilized second half of the word back, then glanced guiltily toward the bathroom to make sure the faucet was still running before lowering his head to continue battling the broken eggshells.
In the restroom.
Jiang Yan turned the tap on full blast, braced himself against the sink, looked at his disheveled hair and half-closed eyes in the mirror, and couldn't help but shake his head with a smile.
This little girl is really becoming more and more sensible.
This time, he took much longer to wash up than usual.
After brushing my teeth, I splashed my face with cold water several times to wash away the lingering fatigue around my eyes. Then I picked up a towel from the shelf and wiped my face before slowly pushing open the bathroom door.
In the kitchen, Kim Minjung had almost finished cleaning up the mess.
The eggshells on the cutting board were cleaned, and the egg liquid was poured into a new bowl. Everything looked neat and tidy, except for a small bowl sitting alone in a hidden corner.
Jiang Yan walked into the kitchen, glanced around the stove, and pretended not to see the failed product.
Then I picked up another bowl, and on the surface of the egg mixture in this bowl were a few bits of broken eggshells that I hadn't skimmed off.
He picked up the chopsticks next to him, quickly picked out the broken eggshells, then turned on the gas stove and poured some oil into the frying pan.
"Okay, leave the rest to me. You go wash up first, and then comb your hair."
"Yes." Kim Minjung responded sweetly, turned and walked to the door. Just as she was about to step out, she turned back as if she remembered something. "Um, Oppa..."
Before she could finish speaking, Jiang Yan, without turning his head, took another egg and gently cracked it on the edge of the pot.
"Arasso, bring one to your Jimin unnie."
He cracked open the eggshell, letting the egg liquid slide into the bowl. He then picked up his chopsticks and stirred it a few times. "Put scallions in yours, but don't put any in hers. I saw her pick out every single scallion when we had army stew yesterday."
Kim Minjung stared with her big, round eyes for a long time before finally managing to stammer, "Oppa, how come you noticed that too?"
Jiang Yan turned around and gently touched the tip of her nose with chopsticks dipped in egg liquid.
"Because I'm not like some nagging person who only focuses on eating and doesn't even know what their friends like to eat."
Kim Minjung covered his nose, puffed out his cheeks, and tried to argue, but found that he couldn't say a word. He could only snort and turn to run to the bathroom.
When she finished washing up and changing her clothes, two packed insulated containers were already on the dining table.
One of the boxes had a small "柳" (willow) written on it in black marker.
The other box had nothing written on it, and next to it was a cup of warm milk.
Jiang Yan leaned against the stove, holding a coffee in his hand, and gestured with his chin toward the unmarked bag: "That's yours. You can decide whether you want to bring the company and eat with Zhimin-xi, or eat at home."
Kim Minjung picked up the box with the character "willow" written on it, and could feel the warm weight inside through the box.
She ran back to her room, grabbed a bag, and carefully put the milk inside. Then she sat down, picked up the milk, took a sip, and said, "I'll take it to the company and eat it with Jimin unnie. She'll be lonely eating alone."
"Okay." Jiang Yanjian agreed in a simple and direct manner, then took out some ointment from the medicine box, squatted down and applied another layer to her knee.
After finishing, he sat opposite Kim Minjung and began to eat his breakfast.
After Jiang Yan finished breakfast, Jin Minzheng packed his things, carefully holding the wrapped breakfast in his hands, and went out with Jiang Yan.
When the two arrived at the SM building by subway, Kim Minjung went to the front desk to sign in first, and then waited for Yoo Jimin in the corridor.
Not long after, a familiar figure appeared at the gate.
Kim Minjung called out "Unnie," then took out the box with the character "Liu" written on it from her bag and handed it to Yoo Jimin, saying, "I brought you breakfast."
He then pointed to the words on it.
Liu Zhimin glanced down at the note, then turned to Jiang Yan and bowed slightly, saying somewhat apologetically, "I'm sorry to have troubled you, Jiang Yan oppa."
Jiang Yan waved his hand, "It's nothing, don't be shy."
Liu Zhimin held the still-warm insulated box in both hands, gently tracing the character "Liu" written with great care on the lid with her thumb, and bowed again, "Yes, thank you, Oppa."
Kim Minjung looked around at everyone, then suddenly tugged at Yoo Jimin's sleeve and waved to Kang Yeon: "Oppa, you go ahead and do your work. Jimin unnie and I are going to have breakfast!"
After saying that, he pulled Yoo Jimin and walked towards the other end of the corridor, and Kim Minjun's muttering could still be faintly heard.
"Jimin unnie, this is something I made with oppa. I helped crack the eggs."
"Dear? Minjung, you're amazing!"
