Chapter 165 Foster Father
Chapter 165 Foster Father
During the long break between classes that day, Zhao Qihang rushed over from the other end of the corridor.
He was out of breath from running, his face flushed red, and he bent over Song Huan's table, supporting himself on his knees.
"Something terrible has happened." He gasped for breath. "Something terrible has happened."
Song Huan put down her pen.
Xiao Yunqing looked up from her textbook, and Zhou Shan also turned around from the front row.
"What's wrong?" Song Huan looked him up and down. "Did the teacher confiscate your novel?"
"No." Zhao Qihang waved his hand, lowered his voice, and leaned closer, the four of them almost touching heads.
"Chen Xu went to confess his feelings!"
There was a moment of silence.
"What?" all three of them exclaimed at the same time.
Song Huan's pen fell on the table and rolled around.
Xiao Yunqing's eyes widened and her mouth gaped open.
Zhou Shan's glasses almost slipped off her nose.
The three people looked at each other, then simultaneously turned to look at the back row.
Chen Xu's seat was empty, his schoolbag was still there, and his textbooks were open on the table. He turned to the physics chapter, but he was gone.
……
Four heads peeked out from the corner of the stairs.
From top to bottom, Zhao Qihang is at the very top, Song Huan is below him, Xiao Yunqing is below Song Huan, and Zhou Shan is at the very bottom.
The four people were stacked together, like a pile of books that had been pushed askew.
Ten meters away, at the entrance of Class Six, Chen Xu stood there.
Wearing the school uniform, the shoulders were broad, making it look like a wall from behind.
But his hands were trembling, hanging by his side, clutching a pink letter, neatly folded with the edges pressed flat.
He stood for a while, then switched to one foot, and then switched back.
Zhao Qihang sighed, his voice very low.
"It's all my fault. After I found out he had someone he liked, I kept telling him to seize the opportunity to confess, otherwise he wouldn't have a chance if that girl had a boyfriend later."
He paused for a moment, "I was just joking, I didn't expect this big oaf, this hothead, to actually go."
Song Huan was both amused and exasperated, and her lips twitched slightly.
Xiao Yunqing craned her neck upwards and lowered her voice.
"Is the girl he likes from Class 6? What's her name? Is she pretty?"
Zhao Qihang thought for a moment, "The name Yu Yu sounds good, but as for her appearance..."
He considered it for a moment, "It's alright. But it's not my style."
Xiao Yunqing nodded and didn't ask any more questions.
The four people huddled silently in the corner, their eight eyes fixed on the tall figure ten meters away.
At that moment, two girls walked out of the classroom of Class 6.
The girl on the left has a low ponytail, a round face, her school uniform zipped up all the way, and is holding a bottle of water.
The one on the right is a bit taller, with long hair, holding a novel in his hand, and talking about something.
The two chatted and laughed.
Zhao Qihang squeezed out his voice through clenched teeth, "She's out, she's out. The one on the left is Yu Yu."
Song Huan looked over.
Round face, low ponytail, decent looks, well, she's somewhat attractive, just average-looking.
The person next to her must be her best friend. The two of them were standing very close, their heads close together as they read a novel, and they smiled.
All eyes turned to Chen Xu.
He stood there, watching the two girls walk over, clutching the letter even tighter in his hand.
He took a deep breath, his chest puffed up, then deflated.
He gritted his teeth and walked out from behind the wall.
He took long strides and walked up to them in just a few steps.
The two girls were stunned for a moment and moved aside, but he didn't move and stood in front of Yu Yu, blocking her way.
Yu Yu took half a step back and looked up at him.
She wasn't tall, and Chen Xu was more than a head taller than her. Standing in front of her, he looked like a tree, blocking out the light in the corridor.
She frowned and glanced at her best friend.
Chen Xu's hands were trembling.
He held the letter up in front of her, his fingers pinching the corner of the letter, which trembled gently in the wind.
"Classmate," his voice was forced out from his throat, rough and muffled, as if something was pressing down on it, "this is for you..."
The corridor became quiet.
Several people walking by stopped and turned to look.
Someone peeked out from the door of Class 6, glanced inside, and then withdrew.
Yu Yu looked at the letter but didn't take it.
Her expression changed slightly.
She turned to look at her best friend.
My best friend covered her mouth, her eyes crinkled, and her shoulders were shaking.
The laughter leaked out from between his fingers, short and abrupt, as if he couldn't hold it in.
"For Yu Yu?" Her best friend raised her voice, her high-pitched tone echoing down the hallway. "Who are you?"
Yu Yu didn't say anything, just stood there with her arms crossed and the water bottle tucked under her arm.
The smile on his face froze; it wasn't a happy smile, but something else, like watching a joke and waiting for it to end.
Chen Xu blushed.
Starting from my neck, it turned red all the way to my ears and then to my forehead; my whole body felt like it had been burned.
The hand was still raised, the letter was still trembling, but it couldn't be raised any higher and drooped down a little.
"I...I'm from Class 4..." His voice grew softer and softer, as if he were trying to burrow into the ground.
My best friend burst out laughing, this time without trying to cover it up; she laughed very loudly.
"From Class Four? You confessed to her even though you know her?" She turned to look at Yu Yu. "Do you know him?"
Yu Yu shook her head.
The movements were subtle, yet precise.
Her chin was slightly raised, and she had a faint smile on her lips.
Chen Xu's hand fell completely to his sides, the letter clenched into a ball in his hand.
He stood there, his mouth opened slightly, but he didn't say anything.
He didn't know where to look. He looked at the ground, the walls, the window at the end of the corridor—he looked at everything, but he didn't dare to look at her.
My best friend was still laughing, and her voice was getting louder and louder.
"Your husband, your husband!"
She nudged Yu Yu's arm, and Yu Yu laughed, though not as loudly, but more scathing than her best friend's.
She tucked her hair behind her ear, glanced at Chen Xu—a quick glance, like looking at something unwanted sitting on the side of the road.
"Let's go." She tugged at her best friend's sleeve, and the two of them walked past Chen Xu and headed forward.
After taking a couple of steps, her best friend looked back, smiled, and whispered something in Yu Yu's ear.
Yu Yu also glanced back, then turned back with a smile.
The sound of two people's footsteps echoed down the corridor, fading into the distance.
Chen Xu stood at the door of Class 6, his hands hanging down, the letter clenched in his hand, crumpled up.
The people in the corridor dispersed; some glanced at him, while others didn't.
The wind blew in through the window, stirring up the dust on the ground, which landed on his shoes.
Seeing this, Zhao Qihang shrank back in the corner and sighed, "We're doomed."
Zhou Shan frowned, gripping the wall. "That woman is so mean, how could she say that?"
Xiao Yunqing nodded, her lips pursed, "That's so disrespectful."
Song Huan didn't say anything.
He leaned against the wall, watching the backs of the two girls at the end of the corridor, and then looked at Chen Xu.
He was still standing there, motionless, as if he had been nailed to the spot.
He sighed and walked out from around the corner.
"Hey!" Xiao Yunqing reached out to grab him, but missed. Her fingers brushed against his sleeve and then disappeared.
"Song Huan, what are you doing!"
Xiao Yunqing's voice came from behind. He didn't turn around; his steps were slow but steady.
The corridor was long, and his shadow trailed on the ground, cut into segments by the light streaming in through the windows.
He walked up to Chen Xu and stopped.
Chen Xu didn't move, his head down, looking at the crumpled letter in his hand.
Song Huan reached out and put her hand on his shoulder, patting him gently.
"Alright, Chen Xu."
The sound wasn't loud, but it was clearly audible in the empty corridor, causing Yu Yu and her best friend to stop in their tracks.
Song Huan said with a grin, "I told you to go and confess to the ugliest girl in our grade, and I didn't expect you to actually do it."
Chen Xu paused for a moment, then looked up.
Song Huan stood beside him, a smile on her face.
He slid his hand off Chen Xu's shoulder, put it in his pocket, rummaged around for a bit, and pulled out two red banknotes, folded together.
"Okay, you win the dare." He stuffed the money into Chen Xu's hand.
"I'll give you the money."
Chen Xu looked down at the two hundred yuan in his hand, then at Song Huan.
Song Huan blinked at him briefly, like he blinked, but it was also like he didn't blink at all.
Chen Xu's hands stopped shaking.
He stuffed the crumpled letter into his pocket and clutched the money in his hand.
Song Huan put her arm around his shoulder and walked back.
"Next time, let's confess to the prettiest girl in the whole grade, not someone so ugly."
He glanced back and saw that Yu Yu and her best friend had already turned around.
His voice was neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for the two people to hear.
"By the way, weren't you disgusted when you confessed your feelings to her?"
Chen Xu looked back.
Yu Yu stopped, gritting her teeth.
My best friend also stopped, turned her head to look this way, and her expression changed.
Both of their faces turned extremely ugly, as if they had swallowed flies!
Chen Xu turned back.
"Um."
He said.
The two walked back to the corner.
Zhao Qihang was the first to come forward, his mouth wide open, trying to laugh but holding it in, until his face turned red.
Zhou Shan stood to the side, breathed a sigh of relief, and lowered her hand from the railing.
Xiao Yunqing stood at the very back, looking at Song Huan, her lips moved slightly, but she didn't say anything.
Song Huan released Chen Xu, turned around, and reached out her hand.
Chen Xu paused for a moment, then took the two hundred yuan out of his hand and handed it over.
Song Huan took it, folded it, and stuffed it back into her pocket.
"I helped you this time," he patted Chen Xu on the shoulder, "aren't you going to do something about it?"
Chen Xu scratched his head.
He scratched it several times, from the top of his head to the back of his head, and then back again.
His mouth opened slightly, then closed again.
"Thank you, godfather."
Zhao Qihang finally couldn't hold it in and burst out laughing, bending over, clutching his stomach, laughing so hard he was convulsing.
Zhou Shan laughed too, pushed up her glasses, and her shoulders were shaking.
Xiao Yunqing stood to the side, her lips curled up, but she didn't laugh out loud; instead, her eyes crinkled.
Song Huan nodded, looking satisfied. "This child is teachable."
Chen Xu stood there, blushing.
He turned his head and glanced at the end of the corridor.
The two girls were gone, and the corridor was empty, with only light shining through the windows, scattering across the floor in small bars.
He put his hand in his pocket and felt the crumpled letter.
I touched it, then let go.
