Chapter 80 Ice Cream
Chapter 80 Ice Cream
The next morning, Song Huan stood by the toilet for ten minutes, but Xiao Yunqing still hadn't come out of the women's restroom.
He was wearing a military training uniform, green camouflage, and his pants were a bit long, with the cuffs rolled up in two places.
The hat was pulled down over his head, the brim pressing down on his eyebrows.
The playground was sparsely populated, with small groups of people walking in this direction. Some were yawning, some were rubbing their eyes, and some were squatting under the shade of trees eating steamed buns.
After a while, the door to the women's restroom opened, and Xiao Yunqing came out.
The military training uniform fit her much better than Song Huan's.
The pants were the perfect length, and the fitted waist made him look very energetic.
The hat was worn neatly, and the ponytail was pulled out from behind the brim, hanging down on the shoulder.
Her face appeared small and pale against the backdrop of her hat; her lips were pursed, her brows slightly furrowed, and she was looking down, fiddling with something in her hands.
One bottle, two bottles, three bottles.
Sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a bottle of spray that I don't know what it is.
She was holding three bottles in her left hand and twisting the cap of a sunscreen in her right, squeezing it into her palm as she walked.
Seeing her flustered state, Song Huan sighed, "Why did you bring so much?"
"Military training, you'll get tanned if you don't use sunscreen." Xiao Yunqing didn't even look up, squeezed a big dollop of sunscreen into her palm, rubbed it, and patted it onto her face.
The movements were very practiced; he patted his left cheek, right cheek, forehead, and chin, like he was plastering a wall.
After the photo was taken, she looked up at Song Huan.
His face was a little red from the sun, and sweat was starting to appear on the tip of his nose.
She frowned and squeezed another dollop of sunscreen into her palm.
"Come here."
Song Huan took a step back. "What?"
Apply sunscreen.
"Uh, no need."
"No, you'll get sunburned." Xiao Yunqing caught up, holding up the white cream as if it were a weapon.
Song Huan took another step back. "I said no."
"Why are you, a grown man, being so slow?" Xiao Yunqing grabbed his sleeve and pulled him back.
Song Huan stumbled forward a step after being pulled by her, but regained her balance and looked down at her.
She tilted her head back, her expression serious, and her hand was already outstretched.
"Don't move."
She slapped the sunscreen from her palm onto his face.
Left cheek, right cheek, forehead, chin.
The movements were much gentler than when he patted himself earlier. He pressed his fingers on his face once, then again, spreading the white cream.
The fingertips felt warm and soft, with a slight sunscreen scent, and were pleasantly fragrant.
Song Huan stood there, motionless.
A few boys who were using the restroom nearby glanced at them, then glanced at them again, and walked past them while turning back.
After Xiao Yunqing finished taking the photos, she stepped back to look at them and nodded in satisfaction. "All done."
Song Huan reached up and touched her face; it felt smooth and a little sticky. "Is it okay?"
"Alright." Xiao Yunqing stuffed the bottle into her pocket, patted it, and looked up at him. "Let's go, it's time to gather."
The two walked towards the middle of the playground, the sunlight shining on them, already making them feel hot.
The instructors were already standing at the front of the line.
His surname was Xu, he had a dark complexion, wore a short-sleeved camouflage uniform, and rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, revealing the strong muscles on his forearms.
With hands behind his back and feet shoulder-width apart, he stood like a tree.
Chin raised, his gaze swept from the left to the right of the queue, and then from the right to the left.
"Stand still!" The voice boomed from his chest. There was no microphone, but the trees along the edge of the playground seemed to tremble.
The queue fell silent instantly.
Some people quickly swallowed the buns in their mouths, some hid the soy milk in their hands behind their backs, some stood up straight, and some were still swaying.
"From today onwards, I will be your instructor. My surname is Xu." His gaze lingered on the middle of the line. "Hey, you, stop swaying."
Lu Ciyuan was biting his nails with his head down when he heard the sound. He looked up and found that everyone's eyes were on him.
He paused for a moment, then removed his hand from his mouth and stood up straight.
He stood still for three seconds, then swayed slightly.
"I told you not to sway!" Instructor Xu's voice rose another notch. "You have no manners, you have no posture! What kind of behavior is this? Step forward!"
Lu Ciyuan stepped out of the queue, his face flushed red.
Instructor Xu made him stand at attention at the front of the line, facing the sun.
Lu Ciyuan stood there, his face flushed, his hands pressed against the seams of his trousers, his chin tucked in, not daring to move an inch.
He stopped biting his fingers.
Instructor Xu continued scanning the ranks. "Where's the squad leader?"
Xiao Yunqing stepped out of the ranks, her steps small but steady. She stood in front of the instructor and said, "Here."
The sound wasn't loud, and half of it was dispersed by the wind on the playground.
Instructor Xu frowned. "Didn't you eat?"
Xiao Yunqing blushed slightly and took a deep breath.
"arrive!"
This time the sound was louder and crisper, bouncing across the playground.
Instructor Xu nodded. "Return to your unit."
Xiao Yunqing turned and walked back, glaring at Song Huan as she passed by.
Song Huan didn't look at her, her eyes fixed straight ahead with a serious expression.
After a morning, the people in the queue looked like wilted eggplants.
They practiced standing at attention, turning, and marching in step, one activity after another, with only a ten-minute break in between.
The sun climbed high in the east, making the playground scorching hot. The camouflage uniforms were soaked with sweat and stuck to the backs. Some people's legs were shaking, some were secretly wiggling their ankles, and some had pale lips.
Song Huan stood in the queue, feeling alright.
I did sweat, and my legs were a little sore, but not to the point of being unbearable.
Running after school every day is still useful, and since this body seems to have been strengthened after the rebirth, its endurance is much better than that of ordinary people.
While others were panting like bellows, his breathing remained steady.
When Instructor Xu shouted "Dismissed," the ranks almost erupted in cheers.
The cafeteria was packed with people, all dressed in green camouflage, making it impossible to tell who was who.
There was a long queue at the food window. Some people were leaning on the table waiting, some were carrying their plates and looking for seats, and some had already started eating, shoveling food into their mouths at lightning speed.
Xiao Yunqing sat by the window with a meal in front of her.
Scrambled eggs with tomatoes, braised eggplant, a large pork chop, and rice topped with some vegetable broth.
She poked the pork chop with her chopsticks, making two holes, but didn't eat it.
Song Huan sat down with her plate, glanced at her, and asked, "Aren't you hungry?"
"Hungry."
She picked up a piece of pork chop, took a bite, chewed it, and swallowed it. "That Instructor Xu is too fierce. He even yells at you for just saying 'present'."
Song Huan took a bite of rice. "That's just him giving us a hard time. It's normal."
"What do you mean by 'showing off'? It's just bullying." She took another bite of the pork chop, her cheeks puffed out. "And that Lu Ciyuan, all he did was move a little, and he was punished by standing for half an hour. Half an hour! Under the sun! I saw his face turn white."
Song Huan didn't reply and continued eating.
Xiao Yunqing spoke for five minutes, scolding Instructor Xu from the volume of his voice to the way he walked, and from the way he walked to the rhythm of his commands.
After he finished cursing, he stuffed the last piece of pork chop into his mouth, chewed it, and swallowed it.
"I'm finished eating." She stood up. "Let's go."
Song Huan finished the last bite of rice on her plate and stood up.
The two people carried the plates to the recycling area, put the chopsticks down, and stacked the plates on top.
As Song Huan walked out of the cafeteria, she turned a corner and headed towards the convenience store.
Xiao Yunqing followed behind, "Where are we going?"
"Buy something."
There were two people in line at the entrance of the convenience store. Song Huan stood at the back and waited for a minute before it was his turn.
He peeked into the freezer. "Do you have ice cream?"
"Yes, it just arrived." The aunt opened the freezer lid, revealing a row of popsicles, ice cream, and ice cream inside.
Song Huan took two sticks, paid for them, and then turned around to hand one to Xiao Yunqing.
She took it, tore open the packaging, and took a bite.
The chocolate shell cracked open in her mouth, revealing the creamy filling inside. She squinted her eyes. "Delicious."
The two stood at the entrance of the convenience store, biting into ice cream, the sun shining on them, making them feel warm and cozy.
Xiao Yunqing was halfway through her meal when she suddenly saw several people walking out of the cafeteria. Feng Nian was walking in front, followed by two girls.
Feng Nian saw them too, and walked over with a smile, "Song Huan, class monitor."
Song Huan nodded. "Feng Nian."
Feng Nian glanced at the ice cream wrapper in his hand, then at the one in Xiao Yunqing's hand, and said, "You guys seem to be enjoying yours."
Song Huan turned her head and glanced into the convenience store; the aunt was still standing in front of the freezer.
He turned and walked back, "Auntie, five more, please."
The aunt took five more, and Song Huan paid for them, then walked out carrying a handful of ice cream.
He first handed one to Feng Nian, then one to each of the two girls behind him, and finally gave the last two to Xiao Yunqing.
She hadn't finished the one in her hand when two more were stuffed into her hand, leaving her flustered and overwhelmed.
Feng Nian took the ice cream, smiled, and said, "Thank you."
Song Huan waved her hand, "Don't thank me, it was my cousin's treat."
After he finished speaking, he stepped aside.
Xiao Yunqing was biting into her ice cream when she heard this and suddenly looked up.
Feng Nian and the two girls were looking at her with smiles on their faces.
"Thank you, class monitor!"
The three voices blended together, crisp and clear.
Xiao Yunqing stood there, with an ice cream in her mouth and two sticks in her hand, her face turning from white to red.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but with ice cream in her mouth, her voice came out muffled, "N-no...you're welcome."
Feng Nian walked away with a smile, and the two girls followed behind, looking back even after they had gone a distance.
"The class monitor is such a nice person."
"Yeah yeah".
Xiao Yunqing stood there, and after they had walked away, she turned and glared at Song Huan.
Song Huan had already torn open the wrapper and was biting into the ice cream, looking completely innocent.
Why did you say I paid for it?
"Aren't you the class monitor? Let's make a good impression on everyone so the girls don't form cliques and isolate you."
"Really?"
"Of course it's true." Song Huan took a bite of the ice cream, the crispy shell cracking with a satisfying sound. "Especially for someone as naive and innocent as you."
Xiao Yunqing was so angry she couldn't speak. She looked down at the two ice creams in her hand, then at his, and stuffed one of them into his hand. "Here you go."
Song Huan was taken aback. "You're not eating?"
"I'm generous, here's one for you." She took a bite of the one in her hand, her cheeks puffed out, her voice muffled.
Song Huan smiled at her expression, took the ice cream, and tore open the packaging.
Two people stood at the entrance of the convenience store, each with two ice creams.
Xiao Yunqing finished eating, threw the wrapper into the trash can, clapped her hands, and said, "Let's go, we have training this afternoon."
Song Huan nodded and followed behind her.
