Chapter 57 Prelude
Chapter 57 Prelude
When Chen Che returned to his dormitory, there were two unfamiliar senior students enthusiastically introducing the booklets they were holding.
Since the start of the semester, Chen Che has been approached by all sorts of people trying to sell him phone cards, cheap household goods, and even gym memberships. His first instinct was that he'd run into another unscrupulous salesman, so he asked, "Brother Ma, what's going on here?"
"Oh, a senior from the school's Youth League Committee Publicity Department, here to introduce our school's student clubs." Ma Xu waved the brochure in his hand, the cover of which was printed with the eye-catching school emblem and the words "Colorful Clubs, Wonderful Start".
Student clubs are an important part of university life. These are various interest-based student organizations, including common hobby-based ones such as anime, music, literature, and roller skating, as well as those with a social practice aspect such as teaching in rural areas, entrepreneurship, and animal protection, and those that can train thinking and speaking skills such as debate, Model United Nations, and sand table exercises.
In addition to enriching college students' extracurricular life, the most important thing is that it also provides a large number of extracurricular credits. You can't graduate if you don't earn enough of these.
One was a sophomore and the other a senior; the former was responsible for distributing the handbooks, while the latter was giving some explanations.
The senior handed Chen Che a brochure and said to everyone, "Those of you who are interested should prepare seriously, because some clubs are quite popular and can't accept that many people. Some also have certain requirements and may have an interview process. It would be a pity if you don't pass."
"This is a rare opportunity, so we must seize it."
Chen Che unfolded the brochure and scanned it. The printing was exquisite and the colors were accurate, showing that the school attached great importance to this.
Above are some photos and brief descriptions of club activities. The photo of the Hanfu Club shows a row of senior female students dressed in ancient costumes such as Mamian skirt or Ruqun smiling gracefully in front of a pavilion. It looks like the scene was taken on campus.
The street dance club member had a senior student frozen in place on Michael Jackson's classic moonwalk.
The card club member was a bespectacled student holding a Yuan Shenwu general card, his face turned to the side with a Tang smile.
"Alright, that's all for now. Those of you who are interested, get ready." After saying that, the two left to go to the next dormitory to give their presentations.
The group of people in the dorm started discussing club matters in a lively chatter.
"Brother Ma, what are you planning to do?" Chen Che asked.
"The guitar club, perhaps?" Ma Xu thought for a moment. "I am genuinely interested in it. I've wanted to learn since high school, but I never had the chance. Now that I have more time, it's a good opportunity to give it a try."
"On the other hand?"
"Learning some guitar will help you pick up girls!"
"gang ting zi you can lou dei kui huo~"
ying ji guang fei sui yue~」
Ma Xu, feeling self-satisfied, began to wail and howl.
"Brother Ma, what kind of gibberish are you speaking?" Wang Guangyu asked, looking completely bewildered.
Ma Xu looked at him with disdain: "You know nothing. This is standard Cantonese. Have you heard of 'Glorious Years'?"
With a guitar on my back and a real Cantonese accent I learned from listening to songs back home, flirting with girls will be a piece of cake.
I never imagined that I was just making a commission from my senior's guitar sales.
"Huh~" The club members expressed both disdain and agreement with the dormitory head's bluntness.
"And you, Lao Xiao?"
Xiao Hui scratched his nose, and said with a hint of shyness and helplessness, "I won't sign up for any clubs. I have to help out at the work-study office." His tone was calm, without any complaints, just stating a fact.
After all, not everyone can enjoy youth, university campus, and university life. Stripped of its colorful veneer, university life is essentially still a period of learning in life, and many people don't even have that opportunity.
Among the other people in the dormitory, one was Zhao Zilong, who didn't plan to join any clubs. His thinking was very straightforward: none of these fancy things were as important as studying hard.
Another one.
"Old Wang, do you want to join a club?" Ma Xu asked.
"Mm." Wang Guangyu nodded.
"What club should I join?"
"Card Club"
"Oh! Three Kingdoms Kill? I've played that too! Only the wise and virtuous can win people's hearts," Ma Xu blurted out.
"No." Wang Guangyu shook his head, took out a small plastic box from the drawer, and saw a cartoon character on it with long yellow hair, green eyes, and fair skin.
She wore a blue cone-shaped hat with pink stripes on her head and a yellow choker with a red gemstone in the center around her neck.
She wore a blue off-the-shoulder top with a pink short cape and a pink skirt, along with blue wristbands and boots trimmed with pink.
"What's this?" Ma Xu asked.
"My first love, Dark Magician Girl," Wang Guangyu said earnestly, then took out dozens of cards from the card box. The back of each card had a black and brown swirling pattern, and each card was covered with a protective sleeve.
"Oh! I've played this before!" Ma Xu said excitedly.
"Really?" Wang Guangyu's eyes lit up. Yu-Gi-Oh! is a niche game in China, not to mention it's 2012. How could he find like-minded people in his dorm?
What a coincidence!
"Yes, I used to fall on the ground a lot when I was in elementary school."
"..."
"If you do something like this, the spirit in the card will cry," Wang Guangyu murmured, shocked.
"Oh, it can't be that bad," Ma Xu said dismissively, scratching his head.
"I have all sorts of random things at home, like an Orichalcos barrier, the complete set of Millennium Artifacts, dark artifacts, and parts of the Dark Archmage's corpse."
Wang Guangyu was taken aback; DogK had never released anything like this before.
Oh, I understand.
K-Company has never released one, but Z-Company has.
That's alright, there are no souls residing in those cards.
Ma Xu flipped through the cards, but he didn't recognize any of them. There were cards like "Scrap Synchron" and "Doppelganger Warrior," and some were white with names like "Meteor Dragon," "Savior Star Dragon," and "Meteor Quasar Dragon"—he'd never even heard of them before.
"What is this?" Ma Xu's understanding was still stuck in the era of Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon.
However, by 2012, the anime had already entered the era of Xyz Summoning, and the Synchro Summoning of the previous era could be considered outdated. In order to promote new summoning methods, cards like Cockroach were even released to target Synchro Summoning.
"My Tamashi," Wang Guangyu said with a resolute expression.
"?" Ma Xu asked, puzzled.
Wang Guangyu didn't continue explaining. The duelist's heart is proud and lonely, and his roommate wouldn't be interested or understand anyway.
A gentle breeze from the window brushed against my face.
"I really hope there's a rich young woman in the card game club who can see right through my proud yet confused and fragile heart, see through my feigned strength, and let me take off all my pretenses so we can enter each other's hearts."
Wang Guangyu let out a sigh, which made his roommates burst into laughter.
"It will happen," Chen Che said earnestly.
"Brother Che, you understand me?" Wang Guangyu's eyes lit up.
"Anything can happen in dreams."
