Chapter 10 Sefro, the Gravedigger
Chapter 10 Sefro, the Gravedigger
The night was deep, but Liu Bei still couldn't fall asleep.
The world is different, the culture is different, the starry sky is different, but what is happening here is exactly the same as what I have experienced before.
In the Han Dynasty, even if there were no differences in appearance between people, they could still be divided into different classes.
This world is even more absurd, with people divided into even more detailed classes. Even among elves, humans, teflins, and all sorts of unnamed races, there are ranks within each race, and between different groups, there are distinctions of high and low status.
"Alas, this world is even more absurd than the Han Dynasty!"
Liu Bei expressed his feelings.
"Where is the Han Dynasty you speak of, sir?" Before anyone knew it, Sefro had arrived at Liu Bei's camp.
"My hometown. But I guess I can't go back." Liu Bei said self-deprecatingly, having anticipated Sefro's arrival. "What brings you here now?"
"I want to see what kind of person you are." Sevlo recalled the past. "Few people truly see us as human beings like you do, not even paladins like you. So I want to really see what kind of person you are."
"Me?" Liu Bei asked, somewhat puzzled. "I'm just a head on your shoulder. Apart from not having the horns on your head, how am I any different from you?"
"Is there really no difference?"
"Then answer me a question first: do you think Tieflin is a human being?"
Sefro opened his mouth to answer, but found that he didn't know how to answer.
If you say you're not human, then what are you? The devil those people talk about?
Is he human? But he has the blood of a devil flowing through his veins, and a pair of horns that only devils have?
"Go back to sleep!" Seeing that Sefro was deep in thought, Liu Bei immediately advised him to go back.
Sefro, lost in thought, left as if he had lost his soul.
"Why does this guy think so much? So what if he's human? What good is he going to do for us? He's always worrying about this nonsense. Is he starving or has nowhere to sleep? If Eltoril doesn't welcome him, he can just go somewhere else. Faerûn is so big, he's not afraid of not having a place to go!" Ansel yawned, looking like he'd been woken up.
Upon hearing this, Liu Bei smiled, though he himself had no answer.
However, Ansel's words also enlightened him. If he couldn't figure it out now, he shouldn't think about it anymore. Compared to these ethereal things, there were more important things to do right now.
"By the way, Liu Bei, those rats really are suspicious!" Ansel, who had been woken up, was no longer in the mood to sleep. He was still thinking about the argument he had with Asderon during the day!
"Of course there's a problem. If I'm not mistaken, those rats are the Shadow Druids who infiltrated!"
"Then why don't we confront that wicked woman?"
"How do we expose them? Just based on a note stolen from Kaha? And look, now that Kaha has been forced to resign, who can lead these druids? You? Me? Or Neti? Ras? Who has that kind of prestige? Believe me, what we're doing will only force those druids who follow Kaha to stand against us. The Woodlands are facing a life-or-death crisis right now; not every druid hates shadow druids like Neti!"
"Is it that complicated? What do you want to do?"
"We still need to find a way to persuade Kahar to come back, before things escalate to a major mistake!"
"So, do you have a solution?"
Liu Bei shook his head, quickly washed up, and then crawled into his sleeping bag and fell into a deep sleep, leaving Ansel, wide awake, idly gazing at the sky and counting stars.
The night seemed exceptionally long.
When Liu Bei woke up, he still looked like he hadn't woken up properly. But when he opened his eyes, he keenly sensed that something was wrong. Why was it still midnight?
"I apologize for disturbing you by coming uninvited!"
A gaunt corpse, holding a wooden staff and wearing a long robe, walked over. Judging from the body alone, it was impossible to tell that the person was alive.
"Sigh." Liu Bei felt like he had been sighing every day since he came into this world. "How should I address you, sir?"
Liu Bei figured he was probably dreaming. He had heard countless stories about meeting in dreams before he even time-traveled.
The Han Dynasty was a world where Confucius did not speak of strange phenomena, physical prowess, disorder, or spirits. Although people believed in the existence of ghosts and spirits, no one had ever actually seen them. Even the Taoist of Great Peace was just a wandering sorcerer who did not possess any real supernatural abilities.
But Faerûn is different; it is a world where gods can descend to earth, demons can enter the world to slaughter, there is no separation between gods and humans, and great power can be gathered into one person.
Liu Bei had never seen those deities who had descended to the heavens, but he was already used to all sorts of strange and miraculous things. He even said that he was more like a god than Zhang Jiao when he went back!
"I am but an old gravedigger."
"What was the old man's purpose in doing this?"
The tomb keeper was quite straightforward; he said bluntly, "You have something on you that I recognize, something that seems to belong to an old friend. Would you mind letting me see it?"
Liu Bei was a little puzzled. He had already removed his armor and was now only wearing a sleeping robe. So he asked, "What are you referring to? This is all I have left. Could it be this robe?"
"You just need to relax, and I will be able to see it!"
Liu Bei was puzzled. He saw that the person in front of him had a kind face and spoke in a gentle and calm manner, yet he had such great power to draw him into a dream. So he immediately opened his mind as the tomb keeper had said.
A skeletal finger slowly touched Liu Bei's forehead.
The next moment, Liu Bei's soul seemed to be drawn to the star realm, and before his eyes were two huge spheres being slowly separated by a group of invisible forces.
He could hardly describe the scene before him, only recalling a passage from the Huainanzi that read: "It covers the sky and carries the earth, encompassing the four directions and dividing the eight extremes; its height is immeasurable, its depth unfathomable; it envelops heaven and earth, endowed with formlessness. Its original streams are pure, rushing and slowly filling; muddy and smooth, turbid and slowly clearing."
The scene before us is even more spectacular!
When the withered finger left his forehead, he felt a "crack" in the air, like the sound of a chain breaking.
But he remained hopelessly immersed in that world-shaking scene.
After what seemed like an eternity, Liu Bei finally came to his senses, but the tomb keeper had vanished without a trace.
As a sliver of dawn peeked out from below the horizon, Liu Bei, in that instant, could no longer distinguish between dream and reality.
Zhuang Zhou Mengdie?
Or is it Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream?
Liu Bei was unaware!
He just stared blankly as the sun rose above the horizon; it was dawn!
The sunlight became scorching, shining directly into his eyes and making him dizzy. Only then did he fully regain his senses.
"Is that God? What is His purpose in coming here?"
The moment the doubt arose, Liu Bei immediately had the answer!
Since he is a god, the only thing on him that could possibly be related to a god is that thing!
That thing he regarded as destiny!
He immediately focused his mind, searching for that light and shadow in his memory!
It's still there!
Liu Bei's resolve was immediately ignited, and he clicked on it!
As expected, unlike before, the light and shadow presented a completely different scene!
