Chapter 189: Truth & Choice
Chapter 189: Truth & Choice
Carter ignored the Skin System for now and continued to creating potions for the patients. He didn’t sleep the entire night.
The nurses and doctors saw everything.
"He really is a dedicated physician." A nurse observed Carter making the potion, not knowing that he was just farming his Synchronization.
’Interesting. Not only does making potion raises my Synchronization, saving lives also does it. I’m gonna destroy this pandemic one way or the other!’
The sun rose and the first light of the day spread across the land. Florence’s eyelids fluttered as she slowly woke up from her eternal nightmare.
She was dreaming. In her dream, she was someone else. A malicious cold-hearted witch with the power to ruin nations in her palm.
The dream pulled her in and slowly corrupted her mind. She would have continued down the spiral if it wasn’t for that black rose.
In her dream, a black rose suddenly appeared and pulled her back from those dark hands. It gave her more time.
Florence sweated profusely.
"Are you alright?" Charles approached Florence with a cup of water.
"Thank you, Charles." Florence grabbed the cup like a hungry wolf and chugged it down. She noticed the white bandage Carter had wrapped around Charles’s head.
"Charles... You."
"Don’t worry. Hugo has taken care of it." Charles said.
"Dr. Hugo is here?"
"Yup. And surprise surprise, his name isn’t Emmanuel Hugo."
"What?"
"The poor doctor that cured you once is actually that famous Victor Frankenstein."
"Frankenstein? The blood surgeon in Luandon?"
Dr. Victor Frankenstein invented blood transfusion and many world-changing medical procedures. New sedatives, disinfect process, many type of antibiotics and medicine. His name had spread all across Anglas the last two years.
Many wanted to meet him. But he wasn’t in the Enthrall Institute no more. The news that Dr. Frankenstein had left to find more secret medical knowledge was well known.
"That’s right." Peter also woke up and got up from his bed. He groaned quietly because of the pain in his arm. The sedative had faded off.
"Easy there. You don’t want to tear the wound open." Charles said.
"Don’t worry, Master Desilet. I will be careful."
Peter sat up at the side of his bed and took a cup of water from Charles.
Then he continued.
"Not only that he is the famous blood surgeon. He is also no ordinary mortal. I suspect that he came to help us for a reason." Peter said.
"Why do you said that? What happened?"
Charles and Peter then told Florence about what happened.
"A shadow creature... Red light around him... That really does sound like a witch." Florence mumbled.
"Or a demon."
The voice came from the door, which startled the three of them.
Carter walked inside. His eyes were filled with dark circles.
He slowly walked inside and sat down beside Charles.
Charles trusted Carter and didn’t move. But Peter and Florence definitely had other thoughts. They kept their eyes on him closely.
Charles noticed that and said, "Come on, people. He just saved our lives. You should give that man a little faith."
"It’s alright, Charles. It is wise for them to distrust me. After all, I did lie to you."
Florence frowned, "Are you... really a witch?"
Carter shook his head. "I am no witch. And I think it’s better to show you."
The doctor in the white coat took out a scalpel and opened a small incision on his finger.
"What are you doing?" Peter said.
"Do you know the difference between a witch, a werewolf, and an undead?" Carter said.
Peter and Charles shook their head.
"Their blood." Florence said.
"That’s correct."
Carter poured a drop of his blood onto a small glass and placed it on the table.
"I call the blood of the witch Cursed Blood. The reason why it is called that way is because the blood of the witch is highly toxic, which is a different characteristic than the invasive and aggressive nature of the other two blood groups.
Anyone that comes into contact with Cursed Blood will be cursed in a literal way. Nausea, madness, panic episode."
"Exactly like how Florence was..." Charles mumbled.
"That’s right."
Carter approached Florence with the scalpel and reached out his hand.
"May I?"
Florence nodded.
Carter made another incision and poured a second drop of blood onto the small glass piece.
He then took a small leaf out.
"Watch."
When Carter let the leaf touch his blood, it was fine. But when Carter let the leaf touch Florence’s blood, it turned black and withered away.
Charles and Peter inhaled sharply.
"Unbelievable." Charles said.
"Even then, we don’t know if what you said is true." Peter was much more skeptical.
"No." Florence spoke up. "He said the truth. I know it."
"How do you know?" Charles said.
"I can answer that question for you." Carter sat down on the bed again. He then told the three about what he had learned from those forest witches.
The Forest Crone. The Necromancers. And of course, the reincarnation of the Dark Witch.
"You mean... Florence is..." Charles said.
"Yes. That is why the forest witch is after her. They wanted to bring her back to the Forest Crone. As for why, they don’t know."
Silence fell to the entire room. Carter didn’t bother them. He just let them process everything.
"One question." Peter said.
"Yes?"
"How did you gain those abilities if you aren’t a witch?"
"I got my shadow power from exchanging my soul with the Prince of Soul. That is an entire different story. I’ll tell you if I have time. We can’t replicate that on you.
But if you want my red power, the power to enhance your physical abilities. That I can help you with."
Carter placed three bottles of deep red liquid on the table.
"Heart Race Potion. This is the reason why I have disappeared for two long years. I must perfect the formula. This is the culmination of my entire life work."
"What does it do?" Charles picked the Heart Race Potion up. He felt the hot liquid through the glass.
"It will bring your heart to the brink of destruction. If you survive, you will learn Metabolism Manipulation. And if you learn Metabolism Manipulation, you will learn Awaken Adrenaline, which is the red aura that you’ve seen I used."
Carter stomped his feet on the ground. The red aura wrapped around him and blasted a gust of wind to the room.
"If you want to protect your daughter, Charles, then I can help you.
If you want to protect your master, Peter, then I can help you.
If you want to fight what Fate has arranged for you, Florence, I can also help you."
