Chapter 405 Going Back
Chapter 405 Going Back
Leviathan suddenly twisted violently, emitting a sonic roar that could almost shatter the glass of a submersible.
Sparks flew from its metal implants, and its red mechanical eyes went out one by one.
"It's working!" Yu Yang shouted. "You're interfering with the control signals!"
Cheng Hai did not respond; his whole body was tense, and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth.
His mutated left arm was fully extended, and the tips of his claws emitted visible electric currents that resonated with the pulses from his wristband.
Leviathan broke free of control and turned to charge towards the attack submarine of the Eye of the Deep.
The submarine hastily switched its weapons, but it was too late.
The behemoth's sharp teeth easily tore through the submarine's hull, triggering a chain of explosions.
Cheng Hai finally collapsed, and the wristband stopped working.
His left arm returned to its normal color, but the scales seemed more prominent.
"You did it!" Yu Yang helped him up. "How did you come up with that idea?"
"I didn't expect it." Cheng Hai smiled weakly. "It's just that I sensed that creature's cry for help. It seemed like my mutated part could understand its language."
The submersible was severely damaged, but it could still move slowly.
Yu Yang set a route to the coordinates provided by Ryan, to a hidden research station located near an underwater volcano.
"So now I'm an animal translator?" Cheng Hai looked at his increasingly inhuman-like left arm and said with a wry smile, "This is getting more and more absurd."
Yu Yang checked the navigation system: "Laine said that Ocean Biotechnology possesses aquatic adaptation technology. If that's true, then the council's higher-ups have known about the existence of the new humans for a long time, and may even be secretly carrying out their own modification plans."
“And Karl wants to stop them,” Cheng Hai continued, “using his ‘purification protocol’ to eliminate all the impure… Good heavens! This is a three-way war.”
The submersible passed through a hot spring area, and the hot water caused the damaged hull to creak ominously.
Finally, a small hemispherical building appeared in front of us, built on a protruding volcanic rock.
The research station looked abandoned, but after Yu Yang entered the password provided by Ryan, the airlock slowly opened.
They moored the submersible in the inner cabin and went into the main control room.
Next to the simple but fully functional living area is a laboratory, with walls covered with charts and notes from pre-civilization times.
Cheng Hai limped to the central control console and activated the system with his right hand.
“There’s an independent energy source, quantum communication nodes, and…” His voice trailed off as he stared at the file that popped up automatically on the screen.
Yu Yang walked over: "What did you find?"
“This is,” Cheng Hai zoomed in on the image, “your father’s logbook. Ryan wasn’t lying; he really did work here.”
The screen displayed John Yu's electronic diary, dated three months before the Great Flood.
Yu Yang's fingers trembled as he scrolled across the page, reading words he had never seen before:
"The experiment was finally a success. Today, the first stable hybrid embryo has survived for over thirty days. Victor wanted to report the progress to the military immediately, but I refused. This technology shouldn't be used to create soldiers, but rather as an opportunity for the overall evolution of humanity. Karl is becoming increasingly paranoid, believing that terrestrial humans are doomed to extinction, and only 'pure' new humans deserve to live. He secretly modified the gene drive parameters, and I had to destroy the entire batch of samples..."
The log abruptly stopped, the last page containing only a few words: "They're here. Carl betrayed us! If I don't survive, I hope my children..."
Yu Yang was unable to continue reading.
Cheng Hai patted his shoulder silently, the warmth of his right hand coming through the armor.
“That’s why you were able to adapt so naturally,” Cheng Hai said softly, “your father protected you even before you were born.”
The communicator suddenly emitted a notification tone.
Cheng Hai checked the signal: "Encrypted channel, from New Atlantis!"
Xiaolin's face appeared on the screen, with a medical laboratory in a floating city in the background: "Dr. Yu! Engineer Cheng! Thank God you're still alive! Over at Haiyuan..."
“It’s fallen,” Yu Yang said gravely. “Karl has taken control of the area, and Dr. Lane is missing.”
Kobayashi's face paled: "The situation is worse. Speaker Mori just declared a state of emergency and authorized the use of the 'Final Defense Protocol.' Ocean Biotechnology has provided some kind of genetic weapon, claiming it can 'neutralize' aquatic mutations! But based on the parameters I sneezed over, this thing looks more like a genocide bomb!"
Cheng Hai and Yu Yang exchanged a shocked look.
"They plan to exterminate all New Humans," Yu Yang suddenly realized, "including the civilians and children of Haiyuan..."
“And us,” Cheng Hai raised his mutated left arm, “any organism that expresses aquatic genes.”
"But why? They already know I have a way to get new land resources, so why do they still do this?" Yu Yang asked angrily.
"What new land resources? Where are we going to find land at this time? Old Yu, did you find some land somewhere?" Cheng Hai was also a little excited.
Yu Yang then remembered that because of Karl's attack, he had forgotten to tell Cheng Hai about the Tu Guo.
"No, it's a long story, but I can guarantee it's about land resources. I'll tell you everything once the Atlantis matter is over!"
The situation is urgent, and Yu Yang doesn't have time to explain.
Kobayashi leaned closer to the camera, lowering his voice: "Gentlemen, the city is divided. The Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Medicine oppose this plan, but the security forces are on Mori's side. We need evidence to prove that the ocean creatures premeditated this to stop this massacre!"
"Your father's research!" Cheng Hai suddenly realized. "If ocean creatures stole his work, there must be records left behind!"
Yu Yang quickly flipped through the electronic log: "Here! Father mentioned the predecessor of Ocean Bio, Pacific Gene Company. They sent spies to infiltrate Project Noah and steal the initial research results. But because of the lack of key parameters, their version has always been unstable."
"Sufficient for patent registration, but not for practical application!" Xiaolin continued, "So they need you and Engineer Cheng—a successful hybrid sample—to complete the research!"
He quickly pulled up the data on the screen: "I found it! There's a hidden subfolder in Ocean Bio's patent files, marked 'Foreign Samples.' It contains records of human experiments! They've been secretly capturing coastal residents for genetic modification experiments!"
“This is the evidence,” Yu Yang said firmly. “We must return to New Atlantis.”
“That’s too dangerous!” Kobayashi objected. “Mori has declared you a ‘non-human threat,’ and security forces have the right to kill you on the spot!”
"Besides, how did you get back now? The floating city's alert level has been raised to the highest level!"
