Chapter 54 I will bring your friend Zhang Lai
Chapter 54 I will bring your friend Zhang Lai
Am I looking for myself?
Rhodes was speechless for a moment.
"My friend, he..." Lucius hesitated, choosing his words carefully, "seems to have disappeared."
Upon hearing Lucius's words, Rhodes's mind nearly stopped working.
I'm missing? When?
How come I didn't know about this?
However, in order to maintain his image as a Swift Ranger, Rhodes suppressed his doubts and looked at Lucius, waiting for him to continue.
Lucius didn't speak, but instead glanced at the vice president and Milan and the others beside him.
The vice president understood immediately; Lucius clearly had something private to say and didn't want him to know too much, so he stood up and said:
"Oh, please have a chat first. The guild warehouse has quite a few high-level potions that nourish magic and strengthen the body. I'll go pick out a few of the best quality ones as an advance payment to Lord Hiro. I'll be right back."
After saying that, he very tactfully left the private room and closed the door behind him.
The door creaked shut, shutting out the world inside and out.
Lucius then turned to look at Milan, but she was leaning against the sofa with a slight frown, clearly displeased with Lucius's evasive behavior.
"It's just about finding someone, what's so hard for me to hear?" Milan toyed with the empty wine glass in her hand, her tone languid. "Maybe I can be of some help."
"Or... is the person you're looking for also someone who can't be brought to light?" She emphasized the last few words.
"Also?" Rod glanced at Milan, only to see her wink at him, as if hinting at something.
"Isn't the one who can't stand the light of day Aphrodite being mentioned?"
That said, Milan was indeed chasing her with several knights in the sewers earlier...
Neither Hiro nor Rhodes had any public interaction with Aphrodite, so this matter shouldn't have anything to do with him.
Quickly clearing his mind, Rhodes withdrew his gaze, maintaining his calm demeanor.
"Lord Milan, you flatter me. I'm looking for my friend, not some strange person."
Lucius downplayed Milan's veiled criticism, while inwardly mocking himself.
"If Rhodes gets involved with that demon bastard, he really can't stand the light of day... well, he can't stand the holy light."
Although Lucius always felt that Rhodes was not a simple man, in the end, that kid was just a corpse collector with no background and no connections.
If people knew that someone as powerless as Rhodes was involved with that demon bastard, they would definitely arrest and interrogate him as an accomplice.
If Rhodes is then accused of harboring a wanted criminal on one side and being a accomplice of the demons on the other, even Lucius will have a hard time saving him.
Even Lucius, as his savior and friend, might get himself into trouble because of this special relationship.
"Sigh... You're either dead or alive. What's the point of disappearing?" Lucius couldn't help but feel melancholy at this thought.
Why did he have to touch that pot of soup? He could have just pretended he didn't see it.
Now I'm so unsettled that I can't even fool myself.
However, he couldn't use the Holy Light Church's manpower to search for him. After much deliberation, entrusting the task to the powerful and skilled ranger in front of him, who was not a local force, seemed like a good solution.
Whether for public or private reasons, it's always good to find the person first and figure out the whole story.
"Anyone who can be friends with someone like you must be no nobody, right?" Milan interrupted Lucius's thoughts. "Going to the trouble of sending the Adventurers' Guild away just to find an ordinary corpse collector?"
“No, he’s just an ordinary corpse collector, with no identity or background,” Lucius smiled at the ranger opposite him, “and like you, he’s not a local of Misty City.”
"...Really?" Rhodes asked, feeling a little guilty.
"His age seems similar to yours, but as for his appearance..." Looking at the ranger in front of him, Lucius suddenly realized that he couldn't quite remember what Rhodes looked like.
He pondered for a moment, his mind filled with the image of the man dressed in a drab, gray corpse collector's outfit.
"He's not bad-looking," he said after a long pause, in a teasing tone. "If he dressed like you or me, he'd probably attract a lot of girls."
"Is he complimenting your good looks?" Alina couldn't help but tease in the consciousness space. "Hmph... he's right, you are indeed attractive to women."
But Rhodes' attention was clearly not on that.
"You just said your friend... he seems to be missing, right?" Rod paused. "Why do you think he's missing?"
He recalled carefully that he had met Lucius at the church just a few days ago. Normally, Lucius would not have gone to such lengths to find him.
"Because I went to his house to look for him, but couldn't find him," Lucius glanced at Milan, without mentioning the location of the cemetery, "and there were signs of vandalism near his house... In short, I'm a little worried about his safety."
"When?" Rod asked instinctively, startled.
Looking for me? When did this happen?
Before Lucius could reply, Alina's voice rang out in the consciousness space:
"There was a huge commotion at the cemetery last night. Since he's a knight of the Holy Light Church, even if he wasn't there at the time, he should know by now. Plus, you live there, so he must think something happened to you."
Rhodes then realized that he had run away with Aphrodite last night, and Lucius, unable to find him living in the cemetery, would naturally assume the worst.
Unfortunately, he was still in a combined state and couldn't tell Lucius the truth to put his mind at ease.
This is a huge misunderstanding!
"I don't recommend that you dissolve the fusion and come to find him as soon as you leave the house," Alina seemed to have guessed Rhodes' thoughts. "He just asked us to find you, and you immediately appeared in front of him. It seems very suspicious."
"Even if he can't see through our true identities because of your special magic, he'll quickly connect it to the relationship between Hiro and Rhodes," Alina advised. "That would be detrimental to the Swift Ranger's future actions."
"That's the only way," Rhodes sighed inwardly upon hearing this, instantly dismissing the idea. "Managing the relationship between our dual identities is a test we must go through..."
If he could, Rod wouldn't want to lie, especially not to his friends.
Telling one lie requires countless more to cover it up; it's too much trouble.
Right now, I still need to go into the Misty Forest with Milan to investigate the source of the monster disturbance. I can only give Lucius a surprise after I've resolved the guild's request and returned to my original form.
Lucius added some more information, but Rhodes was not in the mood to listen at all.
After all, it's his own information; how could he not know it?
"I understand," Roddick replied calmly. "I'll bring your friend back."
Lucius was taken aback when the knight-errant readily agreed.
"Then I'll leave it to you," Lucius said earnestly, looking at Rhodes. "As for the reward, what do you want?"
Upon hearing the word "compensation," Rod immediately choked.
Asking a friend to pay someone to come find you?
He opened his mouth, but for a moment he didn't know how to answer.
Seeing that he didn't speak, Lucius smiled and said, "Money is not a problem. No matter the outcome, I will offer you a reward that will satisfy you."
"As expected of the second son of a noble family, he's certainly got plenty of money," Milan suddenly said slowly from the side.
Upon hearing this, Lucius's expression immediately turned cold:
"What does Lord Milan mean by that?"
"I just suddenly thought of something," Milan glanced at Rod beside her and chuckled, "your friend who collects corpses, he doesn't live near the cemetery, does he?"
"Could he be connected to that demon you're hunting?"
