Chapter 33 Taming the Eagle
Chapter 33 Taming the Eagle
The premiere is scheduled for mid-December, but it's only early December. It's like having a plate of braised pork in front of a starving person, who has to watch it cool completely before it can be reheated. Park Jiyeon doesn't understand this kind of "hunger marketing"; she just feels uneasy.
She comes to the company every day without fail, like an abandoned cat, curled up on the old chair by the window, staring intently at the potted plant. The leaves seem to have grown bigger, so tender they look like they could be squeezed for water, glistening in the sunlight.
"Representative Su, when exactly will this drama air?" She finally couldn't hold back any longer, like a restless lark.
"Mid-December." Su Yu didn't even look up, still struggling with the half-dead printer.
"How many days left?"
"More than ten days."
"So what am I supposed to do these next few days? Photosynthesize here?"
"Wait."
Park Jiyeon rolled her eyes and put the plant back on the windowsill. She stood up and floated to the top of the stairs like a ghost, looking up at the top.
The sound of keyboards upstairs was still ringing out, tap-tap-tap, the frequency as steady as some kind of lullaby.
"Representative Su, when you were writing the outline, did you have 4K resolution in your head?"
"have."
"What scene?"
"Kim Dodge is speeding, and Ahn Go-eun is in the passenger seat. The wind is blowing her hair around, but she doesn't care, her eyes are fixed on the road ahead."
"That's it?" Park Jiyeon looked incredulous. "Nothing sizzling? Like a wet and alluring scene?"
"That's it. That's called tension." Su Yu slammed the printer lid shut with a loud bang. "The screenwriter will turn it into a script; you just need to act it out."
Park Jiyeon pouted listlessly and went up the creaking stairs.
The second floor still had that same cold, "keep away" atmosphere. Cai Xiubin sat there, his back ramrod straight, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
"Hello, I'm bothering you again."
"Hmm." Cai Xiubin didn't even lift her eyelids, her fingers didn't stop.
"What are you typing? A love letter?"
"Episode 9 script. Lee Young-eun wrote it, and I helped her input it into the archive."
"That lazy bum Su Yu isn't writing?"
"He only writes the outline. That's the skeleton; the flesh and blood have to be filled in by others."
Park Jiyeon's attempt to strike up a conversation failed, so she could only lean against the window and gaze at the scenery. A gust of wind blew in, ruffling her bangs, but she ignored it, her eyes wandering slightly. Suddenly, the printer downstairs emitted a loud, piercing "zzzz," followed by a low curse from Su Yu.
When she came downstairs, Su Yu was pulling a crumpled piece of paper out of the printer.
"Representative Su, do I have a role in episode 9?" She leaned closer, her face full of anticipation. "I'd like to play the assassin, or Jin Daoqi's ex-girlfriend?"
"No." Su Yu crumpled the paper into a ball and accurately tossed it into the trash can. "Your character is in episodes 7 and 8. He'll be killed off after that."
"Huh?" Park Jiyeon exclaimed, as if her tail had been stepped on. "Does that mean I'll lose my job?"
Su Yu turned around, leaned against the table, and looked at her with a half-smile: "Your episodes 7 and 8 haven't even aired yet. Nobody knows if you're a movie queen or just a pretty face. How am I supposed to know if I need to add more scenes for you later?"
"So what do you think of my acting?" She blinked her big eyes, trying to get away with it by being cute.
"Not bad. Didn't drag us down."
"So, are you going to give me a role or not?"
Su Yu looked at her with the same gaze he would give a clueless newbie. "There's a supporting character in episodes 9-16. A college student who got scammed. Two scenes, mostly crying. It's in the outline. Do you want it?"
"I want it! I'd rather die than give up!"
"Don't rush," Su Yu waved his hand. "If the audience reacts well after episodes 7 and 8 air, I'll have the writers add your scenes. If the reaction isn't good..."
"How about a bad response?"
"Then you don't need to come. Go back to being your idol and wait to be blacklisted by the company."
Park Jiyeon was stunned. She walked to the window, picked up the potted plant, and unconsciously stroked the tender green leaves with her fingers.
"Representative Su, what if the audience criticizes me?"
"That's right." Su Yu picked up a water glass and watered both potted plants, spilling water all over the table. "Black and red are still red. The worst thing is when no one criticizes you, that's when you're truly doomed."
He haphazardly wiped the table with a rag, but it wasn't clean enough, and water stains spread everywhere.
"You're really rude," Park Jiyeon muttered softly.
"The truth is hard to hear."
She didn't reply. She put the plant back, turned around, walked to the door, opened it, and then stopped.
"Representative Su, I'll come again tomorrow."
"Whatever. Just don't be late."
She pushed open the door and went out. Her ponytail swung back in a neat arc.
Su Yu stood by the window, watching her figure disappear into the alleyway.
Mid-December. Just over ten days left.
These past ten days have been both agonizing and transformative.
Park Ji-yeon's scenes will only be seen after episodes 7 and 8 air. But right now, she's just a newcomer at Inguo Entertainment who has signed a contract, filmed some dramas, but hasn't had them aired yet.
Nobody knows her.
She comes to the company every day, sits, and waits.
Wait for the broadcast, wait for people to recognize her, wait for those who criticize her to shut up, wait for the opportunity that can turn her back on her.
The sound of keyboards clicking upstairs is still ringing. Tap tap tap.
That wall was a grayish-blue color, and it was completely dry. It doesn't need repainting.
Su Yu picked up his phone and glanced at the calendar.
He was waiting for the show to air. She was waiting too.
This is a game of enduring the eagle's stamina. Whoever blinks first loses.
