Chapter 315 Something is Moving
Chapter 315 Something is Moving
Another bolt of lightning tore through the night like a sharp blade, and in an instant, the pale light illuminated the group of people without reservation.
Their faces appeared distorted and ferocious under the interplay of light and shadow, and they muttered incantations. Although no sound could be heard, the scene was indescribably eerie.
Wang Ergou involuntarily shrank closer to Li Xiangyang: "Xiangyang, what... what's going on? Are they people or ghosts?"
Li Xiangyang took a deep breath, trying to calm his wildly beating heart. Although his heart was also filled with doubts and unease, he still tried to remain calm and said in a low voice, "Ergou, don't be afraid! Have you heard of the ghosts in the Forbidden City?"
"One theory suggests that the Forbidden City's walls are red and contain iron oxide (Fe3O4), and lightning might conduct electrical energy down them. If a palace maid happened to be passing by at that moment, under certain conditions, the walls could record her image like a videotape, and the image could be 'played back' when similar weather conditions occur again."
"I think we've probably encountered similar situations."
Despite speaking calmly, Li Xiangyang's heart pounded when he saw the figures with ferocious expressions and bizarre movements.
In this desolate wilderness, he had experienced many strange and unusual things.
Weasel farts can cause hallucinations, black bears can impersonate people and walk out of the mountains on two legs, and even the "water monkey" that was talked about in the village a few months ago was actually caused by a mink.
Those things can be explained in a way that makes them believable.
But the bizarre scene before us is truly chilling.
Wang Ergou was in even worse shape; his legs were trembling, his jaw was chattering, and his upper and lower teeth were uncontrollably clashing together.
The only reason he didn't wet himself in fear was because Li Xiangyang was with him.
To make matters worse, the black cat, the little tiger, and the little golden eagle all showed signs of extreme anxiety.
The black cat's fur stood on end, like steel needles, and it let out a low warning growl.
Little Tiger clung tightly to Li Xiangyang's leg, occasionally letting out soft whimpers.
Even the little golden eagle on Wang Ergou's shoulder kept flapping its wings, as if it were ready to escape at any moment.
As the figures in ancient costumes became clearer, Li Xiangyang gritted his teeth, raised his rifle, and fired a burst of bullets at the group of figures.
"Rat-a-tat-tat—" The gunshots were particularly jarring in the silent mountain forest.
The bullets passed right through the figures as if they were air, without causing any reaction or leaving any trace.
The figures continued their ritual as if nothing had happened.
"Let's go. Don't pay attention to those things," Li Xiangyang said, pulling Wang Ergou up as they walked. "Just pretend you didn't see anything. Go back and get some sleep."
"Xiangyang, you're really something!" Wang Ergou shook his head in admiration. "You can actually sleep like that? I wouldn't dare."
"Afraid to sleep?" Li Xiangyang chuckled, patting Wang Ergou on the shoulder. "Would you dare to keep watch?"
Wang Ergou was taken aback, then shook his head with a wry smile: "Of course I wouldn't dare."
"That settles it then," Li Xiangyang joked. "You can sleep with Little Tiger in your arms; it'll give you a sense of security."
Back at the camp, Li Xiangyang continued his night watch, while Wang Ergou tossed and turned alone. Xiao Hu's warm body pressed against him, which offered him some comfort.
Just as Wang Ergou was drifting off to sleep, he seemed to see those ghostly figures chasing after him, which startled him so much that he sat up abruptly, covered in cold sweat.
"What's wrong?"
Seeing this, Li Xiangyang quickly moved closer and asked in a low voice.
"I...I had a nightmare...I dreamt that those people chased after me and tried to strangle me..." Wang Ergou gasped for breath, his face pale.
Seeing his expression, Li Xiangyang couldn't help but chuckle: "You scared me! I thought something had happened."
He looked around to make sure nothing was amiss, then lowered his gun. "It's nothing, having nightmares is normal, especially in a place like this."
Wang Ergou nodded, but his eyes still held terror: "I know, but that dream was so damn real. If you hadn't been there, I'm afraid I would have ended up like those two..."
"Alright, alright, it's all a dream," Li Xiangyang interrupted him. "Hold onto Xiaohu, it can protect you. Sleep a little longer, there are still a few hours until dawn."
Wang Ergou obediently lay back down and hugged Xiaohu tightly. Xiaohu seemed to sense his fear and licked his hand to comfort him.
As dawn broke, sunlight filtered through the leaves and fell upon the campsite.
Wang Ergou rubbed his sleepy eyes and breathed a sigh of relief as he watched Li Xiangyang packing his bags.
"Finally, it's dawn," Wang Ergou stretched. "Last night really scared me to death. But now that I think about it, it might really have just been a hallucination, just like you said."
Li Xiangyang nodded: "Don't think too much. Pack your things, let's continue looking for them."
"Wait, Xiangyang," Wang Ergou quickly stopped him, "You kept watch all night, you should rest for a while."
"It's alright," Li Xiangyang waved his hand, "Finding someone is the priority."
“It won’t make a difference if you take a short break,” Wang Ergou insisted. “If you collapse from exhaustion, we’ll both be in trouble instead of finding them. Take a nap, I’ll keep watch.”
Looking at Wang Ergou's resolute expression, Li Xiangyang thought about it and realized that it made sense.
Besides, I didn't sleep well last night, and I still have to travel today.
“Okay,” he nodded, lying down. “Then keep an eye on the surroundings and call me if anything happens.”
"Don't worry," Wang Ergou patted his chest, "It's broad daylight, what am I afraid of!"
Li Xiangyang smiled slightly and closed his eyes. Soon, exhaustion lulled him into a deep sleep.
Wang Ergou sat to one side, with Xiao Hu lying at his feet, while the little golden eagle perched on a nearby branch, occasionally flapping its wings.
The black cat nestled at Li Xiangyang's feet, warily watching its surroundings.
"It's alright, it's alright," Wang Ergou muttered to himself, trying to reassure himself. "It's so bright outside, everything's crystal clear, what's there to be afraid of?"
He looked around; the forest looked peaceful and beautiful in the sunlight, completely different from the terrifying scene he had witnessed the night before.
But just then, Little Tiger suddenly pricked up his ears and began to sob softly.
Wang Ergou's heart skipped a beat. Following Xiao Hu's gaze, he saw something moving in the bushes in the distance.
"Xiangyang, Xiangyang!" Wang Ergou nervously nudged the sleeping Li Xiangyang. "There seems to be some movement!"
Li Xiangyang immediately snapped out of his daze, grabbed his gun, and warily surveyed his surroundings: "Where?"
"There's something moving in those bushes over there," Wang Ergou pointed into the distance.
Li Xiangyang stared intently and indeed saw the bushes swaying slightly. He raised his gun, ready to fire at any moment.
