Chapter 285 Encounter with Two Bears
Chapter 285 Encounter with Two Bears
Startled by the gunshot, the black bear turned to run away.
"Oh no, it's heading this way!" Wang Ergou said nervously.
“Don’t panic,” Old Zheng said in a deep voice, “It hasn’t spotted us yet.”
Li Xiangyang quickly checked the gun to make sure it was ready to fire at any moment: "Brother Zheng, what should we do? Fire or not?"
Old Zheng pondered for a moment: "Don't move yet, observe the situation. This bear ran away after hearing the gunshot, so it shouldn't be the one that attacked people first."
The black bear stopped about fifty meters below the three people, sniffing around as if searching for a safe way out.
The gunfire and shouts in the distance grew louder, indicating that the search team was in considerable trouble.
"Go help them?" Wang Ergou asked.
Old Zheng shook his head: "There are many of them, so there shouldn't be any major problems. Let's stay here and observe the situation before making any decisions."
Suddenly, the sound of a branch snapping came from the forest, and then another black bear darted out from the path beside it.
This one was bigger than the previous one, with messy fur and a noticeable scar over its left eye.
"Good heavens, another one!" Wang Ergou exclaimed.
"Shh! Keep your voice down." Lao Zheng warned.
The two black bears met unexpectedly and immediately became tense.
After a brief encounter, the two enormous creatures immediately began to wrestle, their roars and thrashing echoing through the valley.
Upon seeing this, Li Xiangyang quickly raised his hunting rifle and aimed it at the black bear's eyes.
"Wait!" Old Zheng gently tugged at Li Xiangyang's arm. "Let's observe first, don't rush into a fight. In this situation, as long as one side backs down, the dominant bear will consider itself victorious and cease its attack, refraining from further harming the weaker side."
"If you fire rashly, it'll be fine if you kill them, but if you don't, we'll be facing a counterattack from both bears."
Sure enough, when the little black bear slowly lay down on the ground, completely surrendering, the big black bear stopped attacking, tossed its head dismissively, and slowly walked towards the stream.
Seeing this, the little black bear dared not linger and limped into the bushes, quickly disappearing from sight.
The group held their breath and quietly observed the large black bear below.
It was sunset, and the setting sun had turned everything in the valley golden.
The black bear patrolled back and forth along the stream, occasionally lowering its head to sniff the water, looking for crucian carp swimming upstream, completely unaware of the three people on the hillside.
“This guy weighs at least 600 pounds,” Old Zheng said in a low voice. “Judging from the scar on its left eye, it must be an old wound.”
From this angle, the three could clearly see the bear's profile; its fur was glossy, and although its movements were slow, each step displayed astonishing power.
“Uncle Zheng, look over there,” Li Xiangyang pointed about twenty meters downstream, “another one.”
Following the direction he pointed, another smaller black bear was slowly approaching the stream.
"It's a male; currently, female bears are usually seen with their cubs."
Old Zheng glanced at the sound and gave his judgment.
Wang Ergou swallowed hard: "Good heavens, even with a good catch, there are way too many black bears!"
"There's nothing we can do. Over-logging in the past few years has forced them into areas with human activity," Old Zheng lamented.
"What do we do?" Wang Ergou asked. "Fight?"
Li Xiangyang shook his head: "Let's not rush. If we shoot them on sight and try to wipe them out, it will only incite public anger. Those who can be scared away by gunfire shouldn't be our primary targets."
Upon hearing this, Old Zheng nodded in satisfaction.
The three waited quietly, observing the two black bears' every move.
Not long after, gunshots rang out again in the distance.
Instantly, the black bear became alert and looked around, scratching nervously at the ground with its front paws.
The little black bear stopped foraging, looked in the direction of the sound, and then let out a low roar.
Just then, the big black bear suddenly stood up, straightened its body, and sniffed the air.
"Oh no, it smells us," Old Zheng whispered. "The wind direction has changed."
Sure enough, the big black bear suddenly turned in the direction of the three of them and let out a deafening roar.
Since nothing had been discovered, everyone understood that there was no room for holding back anymore.
"Bang! Boom! Boom!"
In an instant, three guns fired almost simultaneously, bullets whistling as they flew toward the black bear.
All three were experienced hunters, so all three shots were aimed straight for vital organs.
Unfortunately, Li Xiangyang's shot, which was supposed to be aimed precisely at the head, still went slightly astray, grazing the black bear's cheek and leaving only a bloody mark.
Wang Ergou's shot was the same; he aimed for the head, but missed.
Old Zheng was focused on playing it safe, aiming for the heart, but he still couldn't hit the target precisely.
The bullet only hit the black bear's chest, but the black bear's skin was thick and tough, so even though it hit, it didn't cause much damage.
After being hit, the black bear's fur stood on end, its eyes turned blood red, and its massive body charged straight at the three of them like an out-of-control truck.
"Don't panic!" Old Zheng shouted in a deep voice, steadily raising his shotgun. "There's still a chance. You two keep shooting the head, I'll take the heart!"
Upon hearing what Lao Zheng said, Li Xiangyang immediately took a deep breath and raised his gun to aim.
Wang Ergou did the same, pointing his gun at the black bear's head.
The black bear roared and charged to within twenty meters of the three of them, its sharp fangs bared in its gaping maw, and a stench that seemed to assault their senses.
"Fire!" Old Zheng gave the order.
"Bang! Boom! Boom!"
Three guns fired almost simultaneously again, bullets whistling as they flew toward the black bear.
This time, the distance was closer, so the shooting naturally became more accurate.
Li Xiangyang's bullet hit its forehead, Wang Ergou's bullet struck its neck, and Lao Zheng's bullet also hit its heart squarely.
The black bear's charge came to an abrupt halt. Its massive body slid forward a few more meters due to inertia before crashing heavily to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Its body twitched a few times, its limbs twitched irregularly, and finally it became completely still.
But the danger is not over yet.
Seeing its companion knocked down, the little black bear didn't run away; instead, it angrily charged forward.
Wang Ergou quickly raised his gun and fired, but due to nervousness, the bullet missed the target and only grazed the black bear's shoulder.
"Don't panic!" Li Xiangyang calmly raised his gun, aimed at the little black bear's chest, and pulled the trigger again.
"boom!"
The bullet pierced the little black bear's chest cavity. It let out a wail, but still charged forward, clearly using its last bit of strength.
Old Zheng's gunshot rang out immediately, the bullet hitting the black bear's head. It finally collapsed to the ground and never got up again.
The three waited cautiously for a while, and only after confirming that both black bears were dead did they put down their guns and let out a long sigh of relief.
