Chapter 262 Taking it Away with a Firm Will
Chapter 262 Taking it Away with a Firm Will
Just then, the lights in the courtyard came on, and several figures walked towards them.
The leader was an elderly man in his sixties, with a robust build, straight back, and sharp eyes.
Behind him followed several young and strong men, presumably the sons of the Yan family.
"What's going on? Who's here so late?" the old man asked sternly.
“Dad, this is Li Guihua’s younger brother. He said he’s here to take her home,” Yan Zhu replied.
The old man, Master Yan, sized Li Xiangyang up and down, then sneered, "Young man, what brings you to my Yan family to cause trouble in the middle of the night?"
"Make trouble? Fine, go ahead and think that way. Your whole family's upset that my sister can't have a son, so you're pushing Yan Zhu to get a divorce? Okay, no problem, just let me take her back right away, so we don't all end up in an awkward situation."
"Divorce? Who said that?" Old Master Yan raised his voice a few decibels. "Even if they really do divorce, that's my son's business. It's none of your concern!"
Just as Li Xiangyang was about to speak, a weak female voice came from the courtyard again: "Xiangyang?"
Li Xiangyang turned his head and saw his eldest sister, Li Guihua, standing in the yard, wearing a thin coat, her face pale and her figure thin, completely different from the lively and cheerful eldest sister he remembered.
"Sister!" Li Xiangyang called out with heartache and was about to step forward.
"Stop!" Old Master Yan shouted. "Li Xiangyang, the affairs of the Yan family are none of outsiders' business. Just because they're not divorced doesn't mean she's a member of the Yan family. You want to take her away? No way!"
Li Guihua said timidly, "Dad, I...I want to go back to my parents' home to visit..."
"Shut up!" Old Master Yan interrupted sharply. "Who gave you permission to speak? Get back inside!"
Seeing his elder sister being scolded like this, Li Xiangyang was burning with anger. He held back his urge to punch the old man and knock him out.
"Grandpa Yan," Li Xiangyang said, suppressing his anger, "my sister has worked hard and diligently in your family all these years. Even if she hasn't done anything particularly meritorious, she's certainly put in a lot of effort. You were the ones who initiated the divorce; shouldn't there be an explanation as to whether or not it's going to happen?"
"An explanation?" Old Master Yan sneered. "What explanation? Your sister married into the Yan family and hasn't given birth to a son in over ten years. Have we deprived her of a single meal? And now you're here causing trouble in the middle of the night. Don't you think you're putting the Yan family in the best interest of us? If you know what's good for you, get out of here!"
"Get out? What if I don't? What do you want?" Li Xiangyang was so angry at the old man's arrogance that he laughed. He stretched his limbs. "Fine, do you want to talk things out today, or do you want to resort to force?"
Seeing Li Xiangyang's arrogance, Yan Zhu was instantly enraged: "Kid, you're asking for death!"
As he spoke, Yan Zhu threw a punch at Li Xiangyang.
Li Xiangyang, who had been waiting for this moment for a long time, advanced instead of retreating, and punched Yan Zhu in the chin. With a "bang", Yan Zhu fell to the ground, clutching his chin and howling in pain.
"With your skills, you think you can hit me?" Li Xiangyang sneered. "Don't you even know what you've been through? I've fought tigers and leopards before. You think you're worthy to fight me?"
Seeing this, the others in the courtyard didn't dare to step forward for a moment.
Li Xiangyang surveyed his surroundings, a murderous glint in his eyes: "I'm asking you a question! Give me a straight answer! Can't you talk properly? If not, what do you want? One by one, or all at once?"
The Yan family members looked at each other, none of them daring to make the first move.
After all, Li Xiangyang was carrying a gun, and the force of that punch was not something an ordinary person could withstand.
Old Master Yan glanced at his son lying on the ground, then at Li Xiangyang, his anger gradually turning into caution: "Young man, let's talk this out."
“Then let’s talk this out,” Li Xiangyang said, his expression softening slightly. “I just want to ask one question: are you getting a divorce or not? Give me a straight answer.”
Old Master Yan pondered for a moment, seemingly weighing the pros and cons: "If a son is born, we won't separate."
Li Xiangyang sensed the sordid motives behind it—they didn't want a divorce, but still wanted their son.
This whole commotion is clearly an attempt to get the eldest sister to compromise. I suspect Yan Zhu isn't a good person either; he might already have someone else pregnant with his child.
It's just that the baby hasn't been born yet, so we don't know whether it's a boy or a girl, which is why it's been delayed.
Although it was just a one-sided guess without any evidence, Li Xiangyang felt that the matter was probably true.
Of course, it all depends on what the eldest sister decides.
Li Xiangyang turned to Li Guihua: "Sister, tell me yourself, do you want a divorce?"
Li Guihua glanced timidly at Old Master Yan and Yan Zhu lying on the ground, then looked at Li Xiangyang, took a deep breath, and made up her mind: "I...I want a divorce. I've had enough of this life. If Yan Zhu wants a son, then let him find someone else to have one with. I'm taking my daughter back to my parents' home."
“Okay,” Li Xiangyang nodded. “Sister, pack your things, I’ll take you and my niece home.”
Old Master Yan's expression changed: "No! No one can leave without my permission!"
“Grandpa Yan,” Li Xiangyang said coldly, “we’re not fighting with you out of respect for your age. Don’t push your luck. We haven’t asked for compensation, which is already being lenient. Be sensible and get Yan Zhu to get a divorce. It’s better for everyone if we part ways amicably.”
"Compensation?" Old Master Yan sneered. "She's been married into our family for over ten years and hasn't given birth to a son. We provide her with food and shelter. We're already being lenient by not asking for compensation! Have you lost your mind, kid? You want compensation from us?"
Li Xiangyang narrowed his eyes: "Grandpa Yan, since you insist on tearing things apart, then let's have a proper discussion."
"Don't you know how much my sister is worth for all the work she's done and the hardships she's endured in your family all these years?"
"If you want things to be simple, do as I say and get Yan Zhu to divorce my sister as soon as possible."
"If you're unwilling, then let's go to court and see who's afraid of whom."
After hearing Li Xiangyang's words, Old Master Yan's expression shifted between anger and uncertainty.
He pondered for a moment, then glanced at the hunting rifle on Li Xiangyang's back, and finally snorted coldly, "You've got a sharp tongue, kid. Going to court? You think the Yan family is afraid of going to court?"
Just then, a child's voice came from the yard: "Mommy..."
Li Xiangyang looked in the direction of the sound and saw a little girl of seven or eight years old rubbing her eyes as she came out. It was his niece, Yan Xiaolan.
When the little girl saw Li Guihua, she quickly ran over and grabbed the hem of her clothes.
“Xiao Lan,” Li Guihua said softly, “this is your uncle, he’s here to take us home.”
Yan Xiaolan looked up at Li Xiangyang and timidly greeted him, "Hello, Uncle."
Li Xiangyang squatted down and patted his niece's head: "Little Lan, how about Uncle takes you and Mommy home?"
The little girl nodded, then looked at Yan Zhu lying on the ground, her eyes showing no trace of reluctance.
At this moment, Yan Zhu struggled to his feet, his face grim, and said, "Father, we can't let them leave! I don't agree to a divorce!"
"Don't want a divorce?" Li Xiangyang sneered. "Didn't you complain that my sister didn't give you a son? If you want a son, go find someone else to have one. My sister isn't playing along."
"You!" Yan Zhu was so angry that his face turned pale, but he dared not make any rash moves.
Old Master Yan glanced at his son, then at Li Xiangyang, a calculating glint in his eyes. "Li Xiangyang," he said, "how about this," he continued, "the marriage between your sister and my son must be handled according to the rules. Tomorrow morning, we'll go to the commune to clear things up and let them judge. You go home tonight and come back tomorrow."
How could Li Xiangyang not know what Old Master Yan was thinking?
They're just trying to buy time so they can do something underhanded.
He shook his head: "No, I'll pick up my sister and niece tonight. As for the divorce, we'll handle the formalities tomorrow."
"You!" Old Master Yan was furious, but he dared not make a move because of Li Xiangyang's domineering presence.
Just then, Yan Zhu suddenly rushed forward, seemingly trying to stop Li Guihua and Xiao Lan: "No, they can't leave!"
Li Xiangyang reacted swiftly, grabbing Yan Zhu's wrist and twisting it forcefully. Yan Zhu cried out in pain and fell to his knees again: "If you dare touch my sister and niece, I'll make you regret it!"
Seeing this, Old Master Yan's face turned ashen, yet he was helpless. He turned to his son and hissed, "Stop!"
Yan Zhu looked at his father unwillingly: "Father!"
Old Master Yan took a deep breath and said in a low voice, "Let them go first, we'll talk about tomorrow's matters tomorrow."
