Chapter 371: Feigned Death
Chapter 371: Feigned Death
Li Wei had obtained the Goddess’s Tears.
But Storm City was under a complete lockdown, and anyone leaving had to undergo a strict search.
Even if the Goddess’s Tears were hidden inside a Spatial Ring, it still couldn’t be taken out of the city.
The use of teleportation was also forbidden within Storm City.
It was impossible to teleport the Goddess’s Tears directly out of the city.
He would have to leave Storm City before he could teleport away.
The problem now facing Li Wei was how to get the Goddess’s Tears safely out of Storm City.
Once he was out of Storm City, he would be free to go anywhere.
Li Wei stood inside a house not far from the city wall, looking out in its direction.
Bright Knights and Guardians of Light had already taken control of Storm City’s gates.
The Divine Hall of Light had set up a Detection Array on the city walls, making it impossible for anyone to sneak out of the city undetected.
Getting caught trying to sneak out would result in an even more severe punishment.
Li Wei had no intention of trying his luck at sneaking out.
He had to find a one-hundred-percent foolproof way to leave Storm City.
Lancelot was already suspicious of him. If Li Wei were caught sneaking out at a time like this, he would be delivering himself right into Lancelot’s hands.
It would undoubtedly be a death sentence.
Li Wei’s idea was to use his Illusion Technique to create a rat and place the Goddess’s Tears sapphire in its stomach.
Then, he would control the rat to burrow its way out of Storm City from underground.
Once the Goddess’s Tears sapphire was out of Storm City, everything would be much simpler.
"A rat?"
Savinia looked at Li Wei, surprised.
"You want to use a rat to carry the Goddess’s Tears out?"
She shook her head. "Impossible. The soil for more than ten meters beneath Storm City’s walls has been magically reinforced. Forget a normal rat; even a Tier Four Earth Drilling Beast might not be able to dig through it."
Li Wei looked surprised. He hadn’t known about that.
He looked at Savinia suspiciously and asked, "How do you know so much about this?"
Savinia chuckled. "We tried to dig a tunnel into Storm City once, but we failed."
"Aside from the ten-plus meters of magically reinforced earth, there’s also a sealed Magic Array underground. It basically blocks any and all attempts to enter Storm City from below."
Elizabeth said, "I have an idea."
Li Wei looked at her. "What is it?"
"We hide the Goddess’s Tears in a corpse and have it carried out."
"Storm City has been transporting corpses and the remains of the Undead out of the city for days. Although the bodies and remains are still inspected by the Divine Hall of Light, the searches are far less thorough than those for the living."
Li Wei’s expression shifted, and he turned to look at Savinia.
A shiver went down Savinia’s spine. She was like a cat with its fur standing on end.
"Why are you looking at me? You don’t want me to pretend to be a corpse, do you?"
Li Wei nodded gravely. "I didn’t expect you to be so eager to volunteer. In that case, the mission is yours."
"No way! If the Divine Hall of Light finds out, I’m toast!"
Savinia leaped to her feet and shouted.
Elizabeth said, "You hid in the Elemental Tower for so many years without being caught by the Mages. I’m sure you won’t be discovered."
"Elizabeth, how can you say that too! I’m not doing it, and that’s final!"
In the end, Savinia lay among a pile of mangled corpses and shattered bones.
The Goddess’s Tears was hidden inside her skull.
Her head was covered in blood and filth, drawing no attention whatsoever.
To evade the Divine Hall of Light’s Detection Array, Savinia had entered a state that made her completely indistinguishable from a corpse.
Her Soul Flame went dormant, turning her into a true corpse in every sense.
Li Wei, in turn, wiped all traces of his Spiritual Power from the Spatial Ring, erasing every last bit of his personal Magic Fluctuation from it.
The Spatial Ring containing the Goddess’s Tears became a completely ownerless item.
It emitted no fluctuations, rendering it an inert object.
Unless someone pried open Savinia’s skull, there was no way to find the Spatial Ring hidden inside.
But Savinia’s head was just one among a pile of mangled corpses and shattered bones, covered in filth, her hair a tangled mess.
It was surrounded by a pile of severed heads from ordinary people.
It was completely inconspicuous.
The cart transporting the remains was filled with a pile of rotting flesh and bones that no one was willing to touch.
This was true not only for the noble Bright Knights, Guardians of Light, and Light Priests of the Divine Hall, but even the driver responsible for the corpse cart was unwilling to get too close to the pile.
If not for the generous pay, no one would be willing to do such a job.
The whole reason for having Savinia hide among the corpses was so that Li Wei could locate the Spatial Ring after it left Storm City.
Otherwise, the Spatial Ring, with all its Spiritual Power and Magic Fluctuation erased, would just be an inert object.
Mixed in with a pile of corpses, trying to find it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
RUMBLE RUMBLE.
The driver guided the corpse-laden cart toward the city gate.
His face was covered with a thick cloth to block out the foul stench of blood and flesh.
As the cart neared the city wall, the guards on both sides of the gate instinctively frowned in disgust.
After glancing at the Bright Knight standing not far behind them, a few guards walked over to the cart.
"Get down. Time for inspection."
The driver got off the cart, removing the cloth he’d used to cover his face from the stench.
After he was subjected to a thorough body search to confirm he wasn’t carrying any prohibited items, the guards began to inspect the corpse-filled cart.
They jabbed their swords and spears into the pile, checking for any living people hiding inside.
A Light Priest walked over and cast a detection spell on the cart.
He was checking for any hidden contraband.
The Light Priest’s eyes flickered. The Bright Knight beside him immediately noticed something was amiss and took a step forward.
"Search through the corpses on that cart!"
A moment later, the men found the skeletons of several Undead mixed in with the bodies.
The Bright Knight looked back at the Light Priest.
The Light Priest said, "They’re Undead skeletons. Nothing else."
"Get these bodies moving. Next time, don’t mix the remains of the Undead with human corpses."
The Bright Knight admonished.
"Yes, yes, milord. I’ll be sure to remember next time," the driver said, quickly bowing his head.
"Hurry up, you’re blocking the road," a guard urged.
The driver didn’t dare to spare them another glance. He hurriedly picked up the corpses that had been thrown to the ground and loaded them back onto the cart.
He picked up the head of a woman with tangled hair and carelessly shoved it back into the pile.
Several other carts had already passed through the gate by the time the driver finished cleaning up the corpses from the ground.
He was rushed several times by the guards, but he could only endure it, bowing his head and muttering, "Right away, right away."
’The guards made this mess but wouldn’t even help me clean it up.’
Covered in blood and filth, the driver led his horse and cart out of the city.
As the cart passed through the Magic Detection Array at the gate, it caused a faint fluctuation, but no one paid it any mind.
The Light Priest had already found the Undead remains in the cart, so a slight fluctuation was to be expected.
RUMBLE RUMBLE.
The cart left Storm City, heading toward the Ten Thousand Corpses Pit outside the walls.
Not far away, Li Wei and Elizabeth were watching the city wall.
They breathed a collective sigh of relief, seeing that Savinia had successfully evaded the Divine Hall of Light’s inspection and made it out of Storm City.
