Chapter 456 - 76: The Shadow World’s Situation, the Black Prison Race’s Livestock Farm
As if on a leisurely spring outing, Yue Xin, protected by his ten guards, rode his tall steed back from a small village near the underground ruins, retracing his steps.
On the way back, Yue Xin looked up at the sky, where members of the Black Prison Race occasionally streaked past. At the same time, he glanced at the commoners toiling on both sides of the road.
By now, within the entire border city’s limits, nearly seventy to eighty percent of the human population had already been ’parasitized’ by the Black Prison Race.
He watched all of this calmly, as if he knew nothing at all.
Throughout the journey, Shadows would occasionally rush past, colliding with Yue Xin and his ten guards.
But without a doubt, most of these Shadows, after colliding with them or even just circling to inspect the group, would quickly depart with expressions of disgust and loathing.
"Lord Bertrand!"
"There are truly more and more of these Shadows these days."
"Must we just stand by and watch helplessly as these monsters parasitize our Human Race?"
The lead Knight of the guard detail wore a very grave expression.
After a few Shadows streaked past, he spoke to Yue Xin in a low voice.
In response, Yue Xin merely smiled.
"Budi, you’re still a bit too impatient."
"You’ve followed me for so long, you should know by now that even though the number of Shadows in our area is slowly increasing, most of them are just in their larval stage."
"Shadows at this stage, including Low Tier and Middle Tier Shadows, aren’t even as intelligent as a normal adult."
"Therefore, no matter how numerous they become, we just need to build our strength step by step. Sooner or later, we will purge all of these Shadows."
At this point, Yue Xin added after a moment’s thought:
"However, before that, we still need to hide ourselves well."
"After all, while Entry Tier Shadows usually don’t descend to randomly parasitize commoners, you need to understand that they do appear on the battlefields of the various Human Kingdoms."
"So, the impending border war will be the true test of our Ability."
At Yue Xin’s mention of the possible upcoming war, the ten Guard Knights present couldn’t help but reveal grave expressions.
As the Baron’s Guard Knights, how could they possibly be ignorant of the Shadows’ situation by now?
According to the Baron, the Ghost-Slaying Alliance had now almost completely figured out the way Shadows harvested the Human Race across the world.
Tierless Shadows were also known as Shadow Larvae.
These beings were the most numerous and widely distributed across the land.
These creatures had no intelligence. They acted purely on instinct, like beasts on a hunt, constantly parasitizing different humans to absorb their malicious thoughts and grow.
But, being larvae, their ability to draw out the malevolent side of human desire was quite limited.
They could typically only draw out and amplify a human’s negative emotions when the person had already lost emotional control.
However, the amplification was also limited. In fact, after a human had a single outburst, the Shadows would consume those negative emotions as their own sustenance.
Therefore, under normal circumstances, a common human parasitized by a larva would regain their emotional composure within a few hours or a day after a sudden outburst of negative emotions.
In a sense, this form of parasitism by Shadow Larvae could hardly change a person’s personality in a short amount of time.
However, Shadows were negative-energy beings, after all. If a normal human was parasitized by a Shadow for a prolonged period, their personality would slowly but surely undergo an extreme transformation.
Perhaps in a year, or several years, or even a decade or more.
A human parasitized by a Shadow Larva for a long time would, sooner or later, become one of those most extreme beings.
However, it all depended on the strength of the individual’s willpower.
But the Shadows—or rather, the high-ranking members of the Black Prison Race—were not stupid.
Why would they let the entire flock in their free-range pasture go mad?
Wouldn’t that be the same as draining the pond to catch all the fish?
Therefore, according to the intelligence Yue Xin possessed, the Shadow Larvae in any given place would typically stay for no longer than a year.
So, once the Shadows left their human hosts, the people in that region would naturally become peaceful and stable again over time.
The Shadow Larvae were like migrating locusts.
But they were different from a plague of locusts that leaves a barren wasteland in its wake.
Because they understood ’sustainable development,’ they harvested the entire world slowly.
In fact, through intelligence released by the True Game, the Players even knew that these creatures would intentionally allow the world’s civilization to slowly recover to a certain level of prosperity.
And once a civilization reached a certain degree of prosperity, it would be time for the entire Black Prison Race’s carnival.
They would wantonly harvest the entire civilization, squeezing it dry down to the very last dregs of soul.
They would continue until only a few embers of that civilization remained.
Thus, the world, now a farm for the Black Prison Race, would enter the next accumulation phase for the rise of a new civilization.
This period of accumulating life was, naturally, not a short one.
Therefore, after harvesting an entire civilization, the local Black Prison Race would migrate to the next planet and civilization that had already been prepared for them.
In this way, a repeating cycle of cultivation and expansion, unique to the Black Prison Race, was formed.
And what of the members of the Black Prison Race who had matured and reached High Tier and above?
Most of those beings would be conscripted, forming the armies that the Black Prison Race used to wage wars of civilization against newly discovered worlds.
