Hiruzen knew he was a bit talented and a situation like his would be very rare and he would be content with the Sarutobi clan producing a few strong Elite Jonin's every generation.
He couldn't help but lament how weak Asuma was , Hiruzen was a very perceptive person and if nothing else happened he was sure that the limit of Asuma was just a Jonin.

The Jutsu Asuma could use were coating his chakra blades with wind chakra to extend its range and sharpness.
Hiruzen couldn't even call it a Jutsu as it was just that easy , anybody with more than average chakra control could do it.
It was not like Asuma was doing some secret technique , and his signature fire style was even more weak.
Hiruzen was ashamed to admit that he had thought of teaching Asuma the Rasengan but he gave up that idea since it was Minato's signature Jutsu and he felt guilty.
He also believed Asuma couldn't learn it ... So why bother.
He also knew the Rasengan but he wouldn't and couldn't use it , the guilt was too much.
He had let down Minato too much , if not for Itsuki's presence Kushina and Naruko would have suffered and he might have compromised with Danzo.
Hiruzen knew himself and he knew what kind of coward he was, he could imagine what would happen to both mother and daughter if Itsuki wasn't present.
He was glad that did not happen and a coward like him was not forced to make a decision.....
