Chapter 781 Living for Too Long
Chapter 781 Living for Too Long
"Konan has lived in Konoha for so long and has been entrusted with Konoha's mission, so it's normal..."
Nagato looked at Yahiko's pained expression and knew how Yahiko felt at that moment.
"Are you regretting not keeping Xiao Nan back then?"
Nagato's voice carried a hint of pity. He knew that Konan's departure had always been a scar in Yahiko's heart.
Upon hearing this, Yahiko abruptly raised his head, his eyes filled with regret.
"Yes! I regret it! I regret letting her leave! The three of us are only complete when we are together!"
Yahiko's voice was filled with pain and longing. He slowly squatted down and buried his head in his arms.
“After Xiao Nan left, I wasn’t truly happy for a single day. It wasn’t until she came back that I felt like it was all a dream…”
Yahiko raised his head, his eyes filled with tenderness and longing.
"Xiao Nan...she is my angel."
Nagato looked at Yahiko's pained yet affectionate expression, and his gaze softened.
“Yes.” Nagato’s voice softened as well. “I’m so happy that Konan came back to find us and didn’t forget our promise from back then.”
Nagato's eyes were filled with longing and gratitude for Konan. The three of them were each other's pillars and their everything.
Yahiko stood up again, his face regaining confidence and determination.
“Therefore, Nagato, no matter what, Konan would never betray us.” Yahiko’s tone was full of trust in Konan. “My original intention in establishing this organization was twofold: first, to achieve peace in the ninja world, so that this war-torn world would be free from suffering. And the second was to protect Konan!”
Looking into Yahiko's resolute eyes, Nagato knew that Yahiko's trust in Konan surpassed everything. He sighed softly and said with a hint of apology, "It's my fault, I was overthinking it."
He walked over to Yahiko, patted him on the shoulder, and spoke with a hint of expectation in his voice.
"I believe we can go back to how we were when we were kids, the three of us together forever."
Upon hearing Nagato's words, Yahiko's eyes gleamed with determination, and he nodded emphatically.
"Yes! I will!"
Although Yahiko's face beamed with a bright, sunny smile, as if all the gloom had vanished, a hidden ache lingered in his heart. He sensed that Minami's kindness towards them was no longer the pure, unadulterated kindness of their childhood. There seemed to be a hint of guilt, a desire to make amends, mixed in with that kindness. He felt as if an invisible barrier separated him and Minami, preventing them from being as open and honest as before. But he firmly believed that as long as the three of them spent time together, this barrier would eventually disappear, and they would return to the past, to that pure and beautiful childhood.
After leaving Amegakure, Konan quickly changed into the attire of a Sunagakure ANBU member. Guided by the markings, she traversed the forests of the Land of Rain, eventually arriving at a secluded rendezvous point. There, she encountered a mysterious masked figure.
Xiao Nan's eyes instantly sharpened. She keenly noticed that the contact had changed; it was no longer the familiar figure from before. She immediately stopped, her tone cold as she demanded, "Who are you? Where is Ying?"
Upon hearing Xiao Nan's voice, the other person stiffened slightly. He carefully examined Xiao Nan's voice, then asked with a hint of uncertainty, "Xiao Nan?"
Almost simultaneously, both of them quickly removed their masks.
"white?!"
"Xiao Nan?!"
Two familiar faces came into view. It turned out that the contact was none other than their long-lost sister—Bai!
When Bai saw Xiao Nan, a complex emotion flashed in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by joy. She understood that Zhang Hai had likely already guessed that Xiao Nan was the contact person, since he had sent her to make contact himself.
Xiao Nan's joy at seeing Bai was palpable. She took Bai's hand and asked excitedly, "Is the teacher nearby too? Where is he now?"
Bai didn't hide anything and told Xiao Nan where Zhang Hai had gone.
"My teacher went to Sunagakure. He asked me to gather information about Sunagakure."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Nan's eyes flashed with admiration. She knew that Teacher Zhang Hai's keen insight was always extraordinary.
"Teacher is truly perceptive," Konan exclaimed, then her tone turned serious. "The intelligence I've gathered indicates that Sunagakure is indeed making a major move recently. They've recalled almost all the ninjas on missions, and the entire village is on high alert. This is clearly a prelude to war!"
Upon hearing Xiao Nan's report, Bai's eyes revealed a hint of melancholy. She loathed war and had even fantasized countless times about how wonderful it would be to live like an ordinary person. However, in order to catch up with Zhang Hai, she could not be ordinary; she had to constantly become stronger.
"Is war... really going to break out again?" Bai's tone was tinged with weariness.
Konan confirmed Haku's guess: "Yes, war is about to break out. However, I don't yet know who Sunagakure's target is. Yahiko and Nagato both guess it's Konoha."
Having received the information, Bai knew she couldn't stay long. She nodded and prepared to leave.
"Now that the intelligence has been gathered, I'll take my leave. I need to report it to my teacher as soon as possible."
Xiao Nan looked at Bai with some reluctance, took Bai's hand, and her eyes were full of longing.
"Bai, please give my regards to the teacher. Tell him that I'm doing well here."
Bai smiled and nodded: "Okay, I will."
When Konan returned to the basement in Amegakure, she found Yahiko and Nagato looking at her with smiles on their faces. Their eyes were full of anticipation and excitement, which puzzled Konan. She subconsciously touched her face, thinking she had something on it.
"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?" Xiao Nan asked, puzzled.
Yahiko and Nagato exchanged a glance, then smiled at each other. They moved aside in unison, revealing a large table of dishes laid out behind them.
The table was laden with a variety of dishes. Although it looked somewhat simple, Yahiko and Nagato had clearly put their hearts into it. The air was filled with a mixture of burnt smells and various spices.
"Konan! You're back!" Yahiko said with a smile, his eyes filled with pride. "Come and try the food that Nagato and I have painstakingly prepared!"
Nagato nodded, a shy smile on her face: "We...we want to give you a surprise."
Looking at the large table of "surprises" before her, Xiao Nan felt a warm current welling up in her heart. She knew that Yahiko and Nagato were usually detached from worldly affairs, and they must have put in a lot of effort to cook for her.
