Chapter 99 Curiosity and Arrogance
Chapter 99 Curiosity and Arrogance
"That's enough!" After William stated his demands, Howard hadn't made a statement yet. Arabelle, who was hiding in the shadows, couldn't stand it anymore. She came out from her hiding place with a sullen face, put a gun to the back of William's head and said, "We shouldn't waste time talking to people like this."
"Who is this lady?" Although a gun was pointed at his head, William remained calm.
"Arabelle, put the gun down. My negotiation with Mr. William is about to be concluded," Howard said.
As soon as these words were spoken, William raised his eyebrows and whistled, but Arabelle became anxious.
"You! You actually agreed to such a condition!" Arabelle looked at Howard with an unacceptable expression. "No! Even if you agreed, I wouldn't agree!"
"Um, don't get me wrong, I didn't agree to this. What I said was that I would have other ways to convince Mr. William," Howard said.
William didn't show much surprise, but asked, "Tell me about it?"
"Mr. William, what do you think is the ultimate goal of the person who planned this plague?" Howard asked.
"Probably they want to infect the entire middle and lower layers, and then extract a special material from the infected bodies?" William shrugged and replied.
Howard was not surprised by this answer. From a God's perspective, Howard could clearly know that someone on this planet had defected to Chaos, and this person who defected to Chaos wanted to please the evil god by corrupting the entire planet in exchange for his position in the Chaos Room.
But for most ordinary people in the Warhammer world, they may not be able to see this obvious fact.
The Empire has always been very secretive about Chaos and the Warp, because even if a mortal knows a word about Chaos, he may be affected. If someone like Howard has faced the evil god or even knows the evil god's true name, he may be turned into a Chaos Egg on the spot.
That is why the former Emperor promoted the Imperial Truth. The essence of the Imperial Truth is a huge lie, hoping to use deception to spiritually separate humans from Chaos as much as possible.
Although the former Imperial Truth has been replaced by the current state religion, which is completely contrary to the Emperor's original intention, both those who promote the Imperial Truth and those who promote the state religion have chosen to hide the truth about the Warp from the people.
This approach did indeed greatly curb the direct impact of Chaos on the real universe, but it also led to a very embarrassing situation: since the people of the Empire and even the top leaders knew very little about Chaos, when Chaos corruption occurred, the people who first discovered the corruption phenomenon often could not connect these phenomena with something called "Chaos" that they had never heard of, so the Empire's response to Chaos corruption was shockingly slow.
Often, by the time the Empire's specialized Chaos Corruption Department realizes a planet is being corrupted, the planet is often already so corrupted that it requires immense cost and sacrifice to salvage.
And from William's answer, Howard could also confirm that this funny guy in front of him knew nothing about chaos.
Even Arabelle or Char, who had always been by his side, might not be able to see the whole picture.
But how can I explain this to someone whose knowledge of the subspace is as pure as a blank sheet of paper?
Howard didn't need to convince Char and Arabel; he could use Lucy to convince Adrien; but for this elusive man of fun, if Howard wanted to convince him, he could only start with the fun itself.
"Your knowledge and wisdom in the material universe are unquestionable, but in another realm you are as ignorant as a baby," Howard said.
"Another field?" William frowned.
"Yes, there is a realm above the material universe. That is the realm of God, which we call the heaven." Howard was about to explain to William when he saw Arabelle still standing behind William, so he signaled her to go away with his eyes.
Arabelle's eyes widened in confusion at Howard's command, but Howard insisted, so Arabelle lowered her gun and returned to the shadows.
"The Om Messiah I believe in comes from heaven. And the person who planned this plague also has his own god, and his ultimate goal is to please his god." Howard was very cautious when saying these words. He observed William's facial expression while speaking. As long as there was something wrong with the other party, he would shut up, or even let Arabelle shoot directly.
This was also the reason why he asked Arabelle to go away, because Howard was not quite sure whether these lies could completely prevent corruption, but it seemed to be effective at the moment.
"And in this plan to please his god, you and the other ignorant nobles are excluded. You are nothing more than pawns on his chessboard."
Howard continued to discuss the packaged knowledge about evil gods and the Warp. To prevent the technological beliefs of Mars from causing ripples in the Warp, the Emperor had fabricated a statue called the Om Messiah based on real-world objects to carry their beliefs, thus allowing the Oil Man's beliefs to be safely established.
Now Howard also needs to make up a string of lies to serve as a buffer between William and the subspace. This lie does not need to be very rigorous, as long as it is sufficient.
"Evidence," William said coldly.
The fact that he hadn't gone crazy proved that Howard's lie had worked. If he had told him directly that it was Nurgle, the god of life and decay in the Warp, who was behind this, William would probably have been corrupted by Chaos and gone crazy on the spot.
"I've already given my evidence. My existence is the evidence." Howard pushed the pancake toward William again, "Please examine it."
William turned his attention back to the pancake, then tried to cut off a small piece and put it in his mouth.
"That's right... Even though I've tasted it many times, I still can't explain this strange food from a physical perspective." William put down his knife and fork and said, "Are you saying that besides the god you believe in, there is another god?"
Howard nodded. "Yes, the essence of this plague is actually a game between two gods. I am the agent of one of them, and the other god has chosen other agents."
"Now, there is a door that you have never entered before that is slowly opening to you. It is up to you to walk into it or close it," Howard added.
But William laughed at this time: "But it seems that your god is at a disadvantage. After all, they come from the same place, so why shouldn't I join the advantaged side?"
"Joining voluntarily and being invited carry different weight," Howard said. "Besides, you're just a mortal. But wouldn't it be more interesting to use your mortal power to reverse the game between the gods?"
Howard knew very well that curiosity and arrogance were the biggest weaknesses of every self-proclaimed smart person.
